I just installed Mint and my screen resolution is low (1024x768, 800x600) and I used to use 1280x1024 on Windows without problems.

I installed AMD GPU drivers from AMD's website and it was no help, uninstalled later.

I then upgraded the Linux kernel to 6.5.

Your old Radeon defaults to this: driver: radeon
The correct way to use amdgpu is not downloading it, but masking the radeon driver, instructions here: https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/linux-graphics-x-org-drivers/open-source-amd-linux/1084579-forcing-old-amd-hd-7850-to-use-amdgpu-instead-of-radeon-driver

Another thing that can prevent your driver from using the screen correctly is Secure Boot, which we recommend disabling, unless you specifically need it.

You can’t use amdgpu on this thing

It’s TeraScale3 not Sea Islands so amdgpu won’t work

Thanks for pointing it out. I did not realise they put that ancient thing in the Trinity chips. This means no Vulkan, and very limited Proton support.
