reboot your computer. It should be about 650 MB on idle, fresh.

#

check with both top and with htop on the Used amount, right after reboot.

swift imp
#

what? how do i do that

velvet owl
#

just type the highlighted words in terminal. one only per time.

i mean if you have a high amount of ram it is probably just caching a lot of stuff and will free up when needed

Turn off baloo

#

Bets on baloo taking all of your RAM and CPU

#

that utility is in just about every linux distro ever.

#

then look at the 'used' memory value near the top lines

swift imp
velvet owl
#

what is the operating system u are using?

swift imp
velvet owl
#

install htop

swift imp
#

ok

#

still 3 gigs

you may want to use the KDE System Monitor to look at the processes, and sort by memory order (RSS)

velvet owl
swift imp
velvet owl
#

so you just rebooted very, very recently right?

swift imp
#

yes

#

why?

velvet owl
#

check the processes

#

see which one is hogging all the memory

swift imp
#

top 3 is: 1:plasmashell 2:baloo file extractor 3:plasma system monitor

velvet owl
#

in the KDE system monitor, there is likely an option to "Show Processes from ALL USERS" . ensure that is on.

swift imp
velvet owl
#

right click baloo: then "kill process"

swift imp
#

ok 👍

#

it keeps coming back

velvet owl
#

ah

#

see if u can do a sort.. sort by 'tree'. that will show any other associated processes or threads that baloo is working with.

swift imp
#

its only baloo_file_extractor

#

in baloo_file

#

ok i managed to do what you said me to do but the ram usage is the same

#

so i killed something called "calendar reminders" and ram usage is down by like, 600 mbs

velvet owl
#

quite strange. try just using the system how you need it. it may adapt

swift imp
velvet owl
#

notes /alarms in the kde calendar

swift imp
#

i see

#

i dont really need it then, right?

#

right?

This can (but not must) be shitty Software with memory leaks in it. Maybe some unclean programmmed plugins or addons too. Btw. I wonder about a function found in Cinnamon Desktop named "Restart Cinnamon if it takes more than 2 Gigabytes Memory" This leave me as a software developer back with some serious questions!
