When I upgrade hardware using linux mint cinnamon is there anything special I need to do? I plan to upgrade my motherboard, processor, ram, graphics card, and maybe powersupply all in one fell swoop. will it just plug and play with the operating system like windows does?

Yes, it should just detect the new hardware. But there is a caveat: If the hardware is new, i.e. from the last 1-2 years, support with the 5.15 LTS kernel on Mint main can be spotty. So what you want to do, in this order:

  • make a Timeshift snapshot
  • upgrade the kernel to 6.5 via Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels
  • do your hardware upgrade
  • boot and check if everything works
