when playing games on linux using steam proton/wine, does it make a difference in performance whether the game is running in fullscreen, windowed or borderless window?
If it does, which one performs the best, and which one the worst?

For most PCs I tested with, fullscreen is significantly faster than windowed. Also, having a second screen display something that is not the game will cost a lot of fps. Not sure if that is an X11 limitation (it probably is), but it is the reason my gaming machine has only one screen, and I do Internet stuff on a small second PC.

personally i find games bug up worse on fullscreen
and windowed is optional
but my preferred way is borderless windowed since the application stays opened and runs even with alt+tab
