#Ram suggestion and issues!

Current ram stick is this
Will normal DDR3 ram will work cause the HP website says DDR3L?
I am confused
seems like a ddr3l
Take a look at this Hynix 1600Mhz low voltage DDR3 4 GB Laptop (SkHynix HMT451S6AFR8A-PB PC3L 1600s) on Flipkart
https://dl.flipkart.com/s/OLROjZNNNN
Take a look at this Crucial LAPTOP RAM DDR3 4 GB (Single Channel) Laptop LAPTOP RAM MEMORY (4 GB DDR3L 1600Mhz SoDIMM 204 pins LAPTOP MEMORY) on Flipkart
https://dl.flipkart.com/s/a2jV2wuuuN
I guess this should work fine?
Make sure to use DDR3L, which means "low-voltage DDR3". It runs at 1.35V, as opposed to the normal 1.5V for DDR3. Laptops especially can be picky and only support the 1.35V. And you may want to get 2x8GB. There are exceedingly few systems that can only support 8GB, and a 2x8 kit is quite cheap these days, even after the recent price increases.
Will this work?
@vestal orbit
And i know i should upgrade to 16gb but i have to buy other components too so yeah
There is never a 100% guarantee a RAM module will work, but as long as you have a free SO-DIMM DDR3 slot, this one should be 99.9%
Okay
Take a look at this Crucial DDR3 DDR3 8 GB (Dual Channel) Laptop RAM (CT102464BF160B) on Flipkart
https://dl.flipkart.com/dl/crucial-ddr3-8-gb-dual-channel-laptop-ram-ct102464bf160b/p/itme354jxqdfscft?pid=RAMGA7PE5DHSJJNP&cmpid=product.share.pp&_refId=PP.5fa8bd12-6829-4c76-995c-1c44284ffa0a.RAMGA7PE5DHSJJNP&_appId=CL
Will this work?
My laptop supports single channel though but i have one 4gb Ddr3L kingston ram installed i want to install that too!
They send ddr3l though
Dual channel means two modules. If they are selling dual channel, they are selling a two-module kit. So either the picture with the single module is wrong, or they have no idea what dual channel means. A board with a single memory channel can still have two SO-DIMM slots. So if you want to make sure this fits, make sure it is only one module.
No like my laptop is single channel
Will that ram work?
It has dual sodimm slots and is ddr3L
I'm confused
Yes, it should work.
But if they send you two modules, you will have three modules for two slots.
😅i am not a tech geek so didn't understand
Apparently, that seller you linked does not understand, either.
Lol
.
Like if it's okay, i can place the order
You can have two modules on a single channel. The modules do not know about single or dual channel, so you just get another module.
It should work ig
How much ?
So u can get 2 of these
It seems like they are selling a single stick
Yeah maybe swap the slots
To get 12 gigs of ram total
Slot#1 8gb
Slot#2 4gb
Yea
More ram is always better
And install windows in main drive
Caddy uses the DVD sata
It's SATA ik
So it will be slower to boot n stuff
Idc about booting slow as
I will just use it for day to day activities like productive
Studying, watching vids
Less distracting cause I'll install few games on windows :/
Okay
It worked guys (ram)
@safe ore great!
It shows 6.7gib smth
I forgot
But in real system it shows 12gb
Ik gib is different
So, if anyone has single channel laptop
He can use dual channel ram there just make sure voltage is right and ddr3 or ddr3l is right
Dual channel ram as far I've seen, refers to ram capable of running in dual channel, so yea it should run in single channel just fine provided its the correct kind of ram
The confusion has been about vendors selling single modules as "dual channel" because they are braindead morons.
Sometimes, half-knowledge is worse than no knowledge.
They think their brain is dual channel ddr5, when it is actually single channel ddr 2
No its 8
Huh
Not 12, what processor do u have
@ruby rain
Wait, open system monitor and go to the 'performance tab'
Okay
Either mint is reporting wrong or we may have discovered a unique issue here
kek
free -h
Its not even the full 8gb, let alone 12
😦
Try reseating the 4 gb stick, or removing it, booting into mint and then put it back in
but in bios shows 12gb?
As I said, a unique issue
😦 need to open the laptop again smh
Do u have any other oses on this PC or the mint live boot usb
no mint only
Do u have the mint installer ?
i can download?
Yea, get it, put it on a USB and boot into it and see how much ram u get there
ok
U Indian by chance?
Yeah?
Cool, me too
Nice lol
\
its crucial 8gb stick shows --------
check this
i doubt even if its real crucial
if it doesnt register in free -h it's an OS problem, and possibly related to a certain BIOS memory lane setting
That's why I said to check live boot
Cause we'll be sure its not an os problem and a bios problem
Ok
are you sure u put the two correct sticks in?
Yes ig?
As it shows in bios
And a weird cmd too
perhaps turn off quickboot in BIOS.. it might be skipping the memory test
see if anywhere in BOOT or ADVANCED or CONFIGURATION of BIOS u can find Quick Boot or Quickstart
Using those cmds shows 2 banks are used
Okay
Checked
Time to check quickboot now
I guess there is no quick boot option @ruby rain
Running memory test ig, says 1hr to complete
Ram suggestion and issues!
sudo apt install cpu-x > check memory tab and see if it shows both. If so, your BIOS is too stupid to run the upper 4GB of the second module. If so, you can only do 4+4 or 8+8.
Pretty much this. BIOS is too stupid. Nothing you can do, except get 8+8GB.
But the bios says 12gb though?
It detects both modules. But it cannot address differently-sized modules. Your only recourse is looking for BIOS updates that may fix it, pester your laptop manufacturer, or install two same-size modules.
Generally, on a standards-conformant system, it should work with 4+8, but your system does not conform to standards.
Yeah, they told
Never buying HP products again
Better to buy ASUS or MSI
Yeah very useful feature
Ik, HP staff being dumb lol
oh God that broken English.. from what's supposed to be highly-educated support staff that must be excellent in English. Disgusting.
it was like reading gibberish
If your support talks gibberish, you might be talking to discount ChatGPT.
Lol
Ik sometimes i feel like i have more knowledge than them
That might be more than a feeling. So, to sum it up: Stay on that memory if it is stable, then get a second 8GB module to replace the 4GB one whenever you can. The expectation is that both 8GB modules together should be used fully, putting you at 16GB. You could just take the 4GB module out, which would still put you at 8GB. Perhaps trade it with somebody else who only has 4GB.
yeah need to sell that 4gb stick
its KINGSTON so i can get good amount of money
ig its stable, it passed mem test
First test without it and see if your system is stable, then you can sell it.
It should be as my system ignores that 4gb stick anyways, and the 8gb stick I'm using is not cheap so yeah
If i knew I'd face this shit issue i would have bought a 4gb ram instead
It is possible that your system currently uses the 4GB module and half of the 8GB one.
Bios so dumb i think probably not lmao
8gb is in Slot 1
4gb in 2
Anyway, test before you make decisions.
It will be late to sell, as my friends own gaming laptops with latest tech and here's I'm stuck with old lol
So hard to find that ddr3 low voltage guy
And yeah I'll test
There are millions of old laptops out there that would improve a lot by going from 4 to 8GB.
Send me the number for the HP support guy, imma see what I can get outta him
Oh they are offline in India rn
