#

is your computer 2017 or much much newer?

drifting parrot
#

2018

#

Asus VivoBook X505B

thorn willow
#

ok, very reasonable

#

let me have a look at the vid

drifting parrot
#

ok so that... thing happened

thorn willow
#

ok that's the USB session trying to start up?

drifting parrot
#

yes

thorn willow
#

in the entry menu, pick a different graphics mode if shown

drifting parrot
#

tbh i dont really have my phone until tomorrow

#

i should try tomorrow at morning

#

but ima update this as soon as i get something new

thorn willow
#

alrighty.

drifting parrot
#

ok ok so

#

on compatibility mode it does work, not the touchpad (mouse) tho

#

i could install all of this with they keyboard but

#

doesnt seem like a good idea, bc then what

thorn willow
#

i'd have thought the standard would suffice, but seems not in the case of touchpad support

#

in ur case anyway, and the rare other

drifting parrot
#

ok so mint edge, i download and repeat the whole thing??

#

screen goes wild

#

@thorn willow

#

whats the difference btw

thorn willow
#

the edge iso has a much more recent kernel (linux is a kernel) possibly a greater reach in hardware support

thorn willow
#

it's worth a shot anyway.

thorn willow
#

just bear in mind not every single computer ever made on Earth is friendly/fully compatible with linux

#

plus there's other distros too to test out that are more bleeding edge, like Endeavour, Arch, Fedora, etc

drifting parrot
#

i was told to try mint, debian, ubuntu and lubuntu
if none of them works then im tossing this thing in the trash

thorn willow
#

if u try Debian, get the live iso's - google Debian cd images

#

if u try Ubuntu, go with Budgie, or MATE

#

unless u like the drastically different Gnome desktop the flagship ships with

thorn willow
drifting parrot
#

i mean it works, i just need to find the correct linux distro

drifting parrot
drifting parrot
slender meadow
#

Most do these days, but Debian defaults to an old-school installer, with a live ISO as an added option.

thorn willow
drifting parrot
#

i need a whole hour up until edge is done

#

and then flash it (15 min)

#

and then try it on the bios

thorn willow
#

oh ok

slender meadow
#

I looked that thing up. Apparently it is an AMD line, can come with Ryzen or the craptastic A-series Bulldozer leftover APUs. But these had Radeons all the way. If the display goes bananas on the 3D-accelerated driver, it might be a broken GPU. It would be very odd for a 2018 Radeon to not work with a 5.15 kernel, but let's see how it does with that newer one.

drifting parrot
drifting parrot
#

it had some problems with 8.1 since it didnt recognize some elements

slender meadow
#

That Radeon R5 is not great, but it should work normally, unless it is broken or something is borked with the driver.

drifting parrot
#

it runned win 10 natively, i might've fucked it up

#

bc i used generic drivers in order for win 8.1 to work

slender meadow
#

No, that would not break the hardware in most cases. Overheating could break it, like with an incorrectly installed cooler.

#

If it still displays normally on Windows, then we just need to find you the right kernel/driver to make it work.

drifting parrot
drifting parrot
slender meadow
#

It might be time to clean out the dust and check the fans, if you can access that part.

drifting parrot
#

i should go with someone who can clean all of this mess

slender meadow
#

If you have a tinkerer friend, perhaps buy them a beer or coffee to have a look. I do that all the time for the people I know.

drifting parrot
#

there was a thing to check the temperature in the task manager i think??

drifting parrot
drifting parrot
slender meadow
#

You can check as often as you want, but the dust bunnies will only come out if you open it and chase them out.

drifting parrot
#

i mean 6 years without clearing dust must be the rason this is so fucking wild

#

either that or termal paste, i guess that needs to be changed as well

slender meadow
#

Re-pasting makes sense, if you trust yourself to do it. Here is how to disassemble that thing. You basically want to remove only the fan assembly once it is open and clean it out with a brush or (gently) with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcZFapu7jpI

drifting parrot
#

i see

#

tbh i should install linux first, then do the cleaning after

drifting parrot
#

edge worked!!

#

@thorn willow

#

everything seems just fine in live usb mode, should i install linux mint rn? or is there anything else i need to know before doing it??

drifting parrot
#

everything runs so smoothly btw

#

i love itttt, thanks a lot i love yall

#

screen goes wild <SOLVED>

slender meadow
#

Enjoy. And remember to try and clean it out someday.

drifting parrot
#

its perfect

#

im on live usb rn, its so smooth

thorn willow
drifting parrot
#

i already installed it

#

i need a reboot and thats all, wish me luck 🙂

thorn willow
drifting parrot
#

where do i download it + is it in .deb?

drifting parrot
#

i had every fancy thing disables in windows and just like the browser opened and it used to be so hot that the keys burnt my fingers

#

but here, i have the browser, discord, and the system monitor, and it is cold

#

this is soooo coool

thorn willow
#

heh

drifting parrot
#

i should've switched to mint like 4 years ago

#

anyways can i pirate games in here

thorn willow
#

well u should keep an eye on system monitor every so often, just to see the CPU graph

#

and still get psensor

drifting parrot
#

okay okay

drifting parrot
#

like, just havin windows opened used to take 60% CPU

thorn willow
drifting parrot
#

bc im traumatized by windows when opening vids

thorn willow
#

well now u can, anyway

drifting parrot
#

i hope

#

i love this btw, im never going back to windows

#

i literally installed brave by copying and pasting a command in the terminal

thorn willow
#

Firefox works really fast too. and if u want less ad banners and tracking, put Firefox security mode to "Strict" in its settings.

drifting parrot
#

this is cool af

drifting parrot
thorn willow
drifting parrot
drifting parrot
#

they are similar to windows, but somehow better

thorn willow
#

synaptic is the best way to check system dependency files and/or get them

drifting parrot
thorn willow
#

well anyway have fun.. dont forget to do a Timeshift backup (dont save your Home folder with that program) Timeshift is great to have a safety in case u mess up the linux installation

drifting parrot
#

btw, im entering hs, its online so i needed to get this installed asap, i start next monday :))

thorn willow
#

and use the Backup Files program separately if there's things that are precious to you in the Home folder

drifting parrot
thorn willow
#

the mint usb.. if it is Ventoy, u can save other files to it

drifting parrot
thorn willow
#

the ventoy stick is good for boot repair (but ur not dual booting anyway so u should be fine)

drifting parrot
#

yeah

#

is there anything like win defender in here? default antivirus

#

or sm like that, i do not like most antivirus bc they slow things down

thorn willow
#

if u gonna use the laptop at school on other WiFI networks, then see if GUFW is installed ( a firewall software) if it's not, install it, and enable it.

drifting parrot
#

i do have a system firewall

#

i guess i should be fine with ot

thorn willow
#

where is this system firewall?

drifting parrot
#

cortafuegos is firewall, so yeah, its that, im gonna enable it

thorn willow
#

i see it (that's GUFW from the looks of it.) just gotta turn on the enable switch

thorn willow
#

the USB thing, I mean.

drifting parrot
thorn willow
drifting parrot
#

yeah i cant

#

the usb says its 5mb, lmao

thorn willow
#

5 GB

drifting parrot
#

should've used rufus

#

no, the usb is 8gb, after using etcher it says its 5mb

#

it kinda trashed it but it works for live

thorn willow
#

no, u should use Ventoy if u dont have many usb sticks. (cuz it can make it as a boot media, while still keeping ordinary use storage available)

#

although I think Rufus might have similar functionality to keep the dirve not totally locked/ unusable for other files

drifting parrot
#

yeah, btw how do i get my whole 8gb back lmao

thorn willow
drifting parrot
#

it should work, if not im fucked and i buy another one

thorn willow
#

u have the mint edge iso kept safe somewhere else?

drifting parrot
#

i could give the usb another use

#

ngl

thorn willow
#

ok well what format did u do with linux?

drifting parrot
#

let me see

thorn willow
#

check in "Disks" app

drifting parrot
#

ok i got my 8gb back

#

:))

thorn willow
#

yeah but what format did u do?

drifting parrot
#

fat32

thorn willow
#

ok

drifting parrot
#

omg this screen when taking a ss is so annoying i just want it copied to clipboard omfg

#

anyways, 8 gigs

thorn willow
#

just remember Fat32 is universal, but also cannot support any file bigger than 4 GiB

drifting parrot
#

anyways thank u soooo much, i could've never figured it out with ur help, now i am at linux :))

thorn willow
#

anyway ttyl

drifting parrot
#

?

thorn willow
drifting parrot
#

i see

#

well, im gonna start exploring this, tysm

thorn willow
#

yeah if u make it, check ventoy.net for the downloads section, : the tar.gz file is the package for linux.

#

AND - i believe this is important for you, if u run up the ventoy installer, u must go into Options, Partition Style: set to GPT (for UEFI bootups)

#

once installed, u can just copy/paste the ISO file like any file to the blank exFAT partition it creates

drifting parrot
#

ok, i see

#
