ok so that... thing happened
ok that's the USB session trying to start up?
yes
in the entry menu, pick a different graphics mode if shown
tbh i dont really have my phone until tomorrow
i should try tomorrow at morning
but ima update this as soon as i get something new
alrighty.
ok ok so
on compatibility mode it does work, not the touchpad (mouse) tho
i could install all of this with they keyboard but
doesnt seem like a good idea, bc then what
try the Mint edge iso instead
i'd have thought the standard would suffice, but seems not in the case of touchpad support
in ur case anyway, and the rare other
ok so mint edge, i download and repeat the whole thing??
screen goes wild
@thorn willow
whats the difference btw
the edge iso has a much more recent kernel (linux is a kernel) possibly a greater reach in hardware support
yes
it's worth a shot anyway.
i kinda hope?
just bear in mind not every single computer ever made on Earth is friendly/fully compatible with linux
plus there's other distros too to test out that are more bleeding edge, like Endeavour, Arch, Fedora, etc
i was told to try mint, debian, ubuntu and lubuntu
if none of them works then im tossing this thing in the trash
if u try Debian, get the live iso's - google Debian cd images
if u try Ubuntu, go with Budgie, or MATE
unless u like the drastically different Gnome desktop the flagship ships with
I just saw this thing. Looks sweet as heck. Don't trash it!!
i mean the ventilators are horrible, the thing gets too hot just by running win 10 (but it wont let me install any other os really) and u know, all pf that
i mean it works, i just need to find the correct linux distro
i am downloading mint edge rn
i thought all linux distros came with like live usb images
Most do these days, but Debian defaults to an old-school installer, with a live ISO as an added option.
how's that going?
i need a whole hour up until edge is done
and then flash it (15 min)
and then try it on the bios
oh ok
I looked that thing up. Apparently it is an AMD line, can come with Ryzen or the craptastic A-series Bulldozer leftover APUs. But these had Radeons all the way. If the display goes bananas on the 3D-accelerated driver, it might be a broken GPU. It would be very odd for a 2018 Radeon to not work with a 5.15 kernel, but let's see how it does with that newer one.
wait it is beacause of a faulty gpu
amd a9, yeah
it had some problems with 8.1 since it didnt recognize some elements
That Radeon R5 is not great, but it should work normally, unless it is broken or something is borked with the driver.
i mean, i forced win 8.1 in here
it runned win 10 natively, i might've fucked it up
bc i used generic drivers in order for win 8.1 to work
from driverpack.io
No, that would not break the hardware in most cases. Overheating could break it, like with an incorrectly installed cooler.
If it still displays normally on Windows, then we just need to find you the right kernel/driver to make it work.
yeah this laptop gets hotter than the fucking sun for no reason
yeah it is correct on windows, i guess edge should work
It might be time to clean out the dust and check the fans, if you can access that part.
i wanted to do it since like 3 years ago but i do not have the tools to open it
i should go with someone who can clean all of this mess
If you have a tinkerer friend, perhaps buy them a beer or coffee to have a look. I do that all the time for the people I know.
there was a thing to check the temperature in the task manager i think??
maybe, i will check out with someone who repairs computers atp
sadly i do not have a friend like that
You can check as often as you want, but the dust bunnies will only come out if you open it and chase them out.
yeah i guess so
i mean 6 years without clearing dust must be the rason this is so fucking wild
either that or termal paste, i guess that needs to be changed as well
Re-pasting makes sense, if you trust yourself to do it. Here is how to disassemble that thing. You basically want to remove only the fan assembly once it is open and clean it out with a brush or (gently) with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcZFapu7jpI
edge worked!!
@thorn willow
everything seems just fine in live usb mode, should i install linux mint rn? or is there anything else i need to know before doing it??
edge works
everything runs so smoothly btw
i love itttt, thanks a lot i love yall
screen goes wild <SOLVED>
Enjoy. And remember to try and clean it out someday.
oh nice.
install a small app called psensor to keep track of your pc's temperatures, and Google 'Kingpin thermal paste' for high quality stuff.
psensor?
where do i download it + is it in .deb?
tbh it isnt even overheating rn with linux
i had every fancy thing disables in windows and just like the browser opened and it used to be so hot that the keys burnt my fingers
but here, i have the browser, discord, and the system monitor, and it is cold
this is soooo coool
heh
i should've switched to mint like 4 years ago
anyways can i pirate games in here
well u should keep an eye on system monitor every so often, just to see the CPU graph
and still get psensor
it is fine isnt it?
like, just havin windows opened used to take 60% CPU
that's basically idle, unless you play some hi-def 60fps Youtube in browser
i mean i dont use yt in computer
bc im traumatized by windows when opening vids
well now u can, anyway
i hope
i love this btw, im never going back to windows
i literally installed brave by copying and pasting a command in the terminal
Firefox works really fast too. and if u want less ad banners and tracking, put Firefox security mode to "Strict" in its settings.
this is cool af
i setted up brave to block trackers, firefox isnt my personal favorite bc its kinda slow
check out the Software Manager, and get acquainted. Also I really urge you to get acquainted to Synaptic package manager, as it is extremely useful for searching up what version of something you have, or installing or locking packages from future updates. and also uninstalling.
software manager is kinda like the app store, looks good, but im kinda acquainted to installing things myself
i see
they are similar to windows, but somehow better
synaptic is the best way to check system dependency files and/or get them
hmm i see, i just use this for school tbh
well anyway have fun.. dont forget to do a Timeshift backup (dont save your Home folder with that program) Timeshift is great to have a safety in case u mess up the linux installation
btw, im entering hs, its online so i needed to get this installed asap, i start next monday :))
and use the Backup Files program separately if there's things that are precious to you in the Home folder
i mean i will keep my mint usb safe too
the mint usb.. if it is Ventoy, u can save other files to it
nah, again, all of my important stuff is in a usb that i only use disconnected from wifi
i see
the ventoy stick is good for boot repair (but ur not dual booting anyway so u should be fine)
yeah
is there anything like win defender in here? default antivirus
or sm like that, i do not like most antivirus bc they slow things down
if u gonna use the laptop at school on other WiFI networks, then see if GUFW is installed ( a firewall software) if it's not, install it, and enable it.
where is this system firewall?
i see it (that's GUFW from the looks of it.) just gotta turn on the enable switch
how did you make this? with Ventoy or something else?
the USB thing, I mean.
etcher
yep, as simple as that
oh in that case, you cannot add more files to the USB stick.
5 GB
should've used rufus
no, the usb is 8gb, after using etcher it says its 5mb
it kinda trashed it but it works for live
no, u should use Ventoy if u dont have many usb sticks. (cuz it can make it as a boot media, while still keeping ordinary use storage available)
although I think Rufus might have similar functionality to keep the dirve not totally locked/ unusable for other files
exactly 😛
ok i formated it with linux
it should work, if not im fucked and i buy another one
u have the mint edge iso kept safe somewhere else?
i already copied it to a hard drive
i could give the usb another use
ngl
ok well what format did u do with linux?
let me see
check in "Disks" app
yeah but what format did u do?
fat32
ok
omg this screen when taking a ss is so annoying i just want it copied to clipboard omfg
anyways, 8 gigs
just remember Fat32 is universal, but also cannot support any file bigger than 4 GiB
yeah, just small files, its ok tho
anyways thank u soooo much, i could've never figured it out with ur help, now i am at linux :))
yeah don't lose ur Mint edge ISO. it's better if u did make the usb with ventoy, then u have it as an emergency boot disk, PLUS have ~5 GB room left for other small stuff
anyway ttyl
ventoy is kinda like rufus then
?
it's more transparent, and easy to add 2nd or 3rd ISO's without re-flashing all
yeah if u make it, check ventoy.net for the downloads section, : the tar.gz file is the package for linux.
AND - i believe this is important for you, if u run up the ventoy installer, u must go into Options, Partition Style: set to GPT (for UEFI bootups)
once installed, u can just copy/paste the ISO file like any file to the blank exFAT partition it creates
