#No wifi option in cinnamon 21.3
103 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
hello
I think it is due to the particular Linux kernel that may not support it. check 'System Info' in the menu n tell us.
another possibility is the wifi radio on ur system is OFF via a switch.
check your laptop's keyboard for a radio switch of some logo
probably coloured as a blue thing doubled onto another key
The kernel is 5.15.0-91-gerenic
ok thx. check the keys now for either Airplane mode symbol or a radio emission or tower symbol
Airplane mode key turns Bluetooth on and off
once such a key is toggled, the tray icon will very quickly turn to a Wifi symbol
further diagnosis: check via command inxi -N
Network: Device-1: Realtek driver: N/A
I'm assuming that means it's missing some driver
should show more than one device
if u can hook that laptop up with Ethernet to your router or modem, then try to update the kernel via the Update Manager 'View' menu command.
It doesn't have an Ethernet port
otherwise, get the Mint Cinnamon edge iso
u have another pc?
or are u dual booting Windows?
Yeah, I have a windows 7 and another windows 10 desktop. I didn't have enough space on this laptop to dual boot and still be able to use it for anything
I'll try cinnamon edge
I don't remember the name, I'll check. I used another one before and it messed up my USB drive so I used something else this time
idk if I helped you .. i possibly did. was it Ventoy?
Balena etcher
oh this time u used Etcher?
Yeah, it worked fine as far as I know
alright then just reflash with edge iso from linuxmint.com
it has a later kernel that should prob detect ur Wifi chip
I'm not having any obvious issues besides no WiFi. Looks like it's probably because of AMD Radeon
(u can even test with the live drive before installing to make sure it detects the Wifi)
nothing to do with AMD
How do I open the boot menu?
Before I could click F8 on my keyboard while it was turning on
But now that doesn't work
use the other key that is listed at startup time to enter BIOS setup
and tell me or send photo of what shows up under the Boot devices category
What do you mean? Maybe I'm not doing the right thing
usually there's a message at bottom of the screen as soon as you power up the computer (the manufacturer logo screen) the message says what key to press for BIOS setup
It shows a black screen, loads to the mint logo, then immediately loads to my lock screen
oh to the 5.15 Mint install
I mean typically there's ALWAYS a manufacturer logo screen that lasts 1 or 2 seconds at powerup
I have the flashed Edge USB drive plugged in and I'm trying to install that
There was before I installed Linux
A Lenovo logo screen on windows
But this loads straight into Linux
not even 1 second while the pc does Power-on, Self-Test? (POST)
There's a black screen for 10 seconds, then the mint logo pops up, then it shows the default lock screen. Nothing else
either f1
or Enter key.. about 2.5 seconds after turning on power.
Any function keys make the mint logo disappear and it shows text scrolling until it loads the lock screen
then try Enter key.. 2 seconds after power on to the system.
Didn't work
also check your keyboard that the F-keys dont require the use of an Fn button to execute them
I'll try that
if the F functions are upper row labelled, then for sure need Fn
Still doesn't work
Is there a command to enable it every time I turn on the computer?
according to that article i posted, it's F12 OR Fn+F11
enable what?
To always open on the BIOS menu
Weird, it was working with F8 and F2 before
no. no computer does that. there is (in the BIOS settings itself an adjustment for a timer to show the "Press whatever to enter BIOS, Press whatever for Boot options" though
any way, with the live USB plugged in, Try F12 to see if u get a Boot options menu showing devices to boot from at startup
or use a regular external keyboard plugged in to USB
I got it this time
i suspect ur having Fn issues accessing the proper F keys
F12
for the boot menu?
load up Linux Mint edge live, and see if the Wifi is available on the desktop
Boot manager. It shows
SATA HDD : MMC128 USB HDD : SanDisk ubuntu (MMC128) Linpus Lite (SanDisk)
I'm assuming I click enter on the USB
well which usb drive has the ISO of mint edge?
I only have one plugged in
the USB HDD Sandisk, or the Linpus Lite Sandisk?
I think it's probably the USB HDD Sandisk
try it
It's the Linpus lite Sandisk
Haha now it shows the Lenovo logo
Apparently it still had the last mint ISO I used even though I formatted it
And wifi works!
Mine still doesn't show that though
as u can see the shortcuts at the bottom
u can adjust that if u want via F2 to enter the setup at power on time
Mine looks like this (not my screen, taken from Google)
anyway if ur Wifi works now, i say go ahead n install over ur old install (erase disk n install linux mint) just pick the right drive
any update on your case?
Everything is working great now. No issues at all
oh nice
tag it Solved then
you're welcome
I'm a bit late, but in the future if something similar happens again, you can use USB Tethering on an android phone to act like an ethernet connection through your usb port.
