On my previous win10 machine with OEM drivers (https://www.asus.com/us/supportonly/xonar u7/helpdesk_download/) things worked fine and the sound was plenty loud, but on a different w10 device and my current linux mint pc the sound is barely audible.
The mic volume has been set to max in both pulseaudio and alsamixer, but the volume remains low.
#Low microphone volume with Xonar U7 USB sound card

hit F4 in Alsamixer, i believe u need to tweak the capture levels but dont overdrive it
mic column gives no controls, gain pad ctrl can only be 100, 50, or 0
and thats when controlled by arrow keys, not pgup and pgdn
yep. usually the arrow keys
i see a red left arrow beside the Line column.. does it go to a hidden page?
no, just indicates that its currently selected by the cursor
maximize the window, just incase not seeing everything
it does seem like that is everything
so xonar is the usb thing eh.
check the config tab of pavucontrol
if you dont use the Built-in audio, turn that profile to off
from top to bottom:
graphics card hdmi audio
external sound card (the one im trying to get working here)
usb camera mic
onboard audio
disabled it, no change to sound levels
when talking i get the slightest sliver in pavucontrol's volumeter bar
go back to the input tab.. try toggle the mute to off, then on
no notable difference
how much of the volume meter do u see when u tap on the microphone?
double check connection
have done, all is good
i'll have a look at the usb specs.. i unfortunately didnt see the mic boost column in alsa i was hoping to find
brb
i can get it to a usable level with pulseeffects by boosting the volume there, but i cant seem to get it to apply to anything
it auto disables all applications so it also doesnt want to apply to sound outputs
that seems to be fixed by enabling "process all outputs/inputs" in pulseeffects
i wonder if flipping the state for Line - would help
maybe it got mixed up between line level and mic level
nah, if it was the wrong way it wouldnt record anything
ive got usable volume now that ive got pulseeffects working, so i guess we'll see how it goes
it would be nice to get the xonar's internal gain working but i'll try how it goes without it
another thing to check out is in pavucontrol, while a recording application is open, the recording tab will present it, and allow a capture gain via the slider.
