I booted into Mint once and I wanted to check once more if I had any important files that I need to back up so i turned off my system and checked. Afterwards trying to boot back into Mint on my flash drive this error shows up.

terse quartz
#

so what's the deal so far, did u wipe off ur disk and ur EFI partition?

vestal vessel
#

idk what that means

#

i still have windows

terse quartz
#

and u want to get rid of it?

vestal vessel
#

i cant boot into mint. im reformatting the usb with rufus instead of belana

vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

no dont.. trust me, if anything, Etcher is better

#

ok so what u want to / need to do is a true FRESH INSTALL

vestal vessel
#

so dont use belana etcher?

terse quartz
#

no, DO use it

vestal vessel
#

oh ok

terse quartz
#

but first, gotta check ur layout

#

open Disk management in Windows

vestal vessel
#

gimme a few minutes

terse quartz
#

alright tag-reply when ur there

vestal vessel
#

@terse quartz ok i opened disk management

terse quartz
#

ok do u have only 1 hard drive?

#

if so, it should show as Disk0 there

vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

right click that area where it says Disk 0, then Properties

#

then go to the Volumes tab of properties, and send a shot

#

as in, literally right-click directly overtop the grey area that says Disk 0, Basic....

vestal vessel
#

im in the volumes tab

terse quartz
#

yes can u show the image?

vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

ok good. just wanted to make sure what it was, and the partitioning is on GPT

#

next step.

#

Admin Powershell> powercfg /h off

vestal vessel
#

i dont want dual boot

terse quartz
#

then we reboot to you BIOS, and ensure secure boot wont bug u

terse quartz
vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

n set it to off

vestal vessel
#

i dont htink it did anything

terse quartz
#

no it did

terse quartz
#

now reboot and hit the key to go into ur BIOS setup page

vestal vessel
#

wait im flashing the usb stick again but with balenaEtcher this time

vestal vessel
#

how should i reboot, should i just turn off and on or restart?

terse quartz
#

do a 'restart'

#

then get ready to hit the key to

#

trigger the BIOS setup page

vestal vessel
#

"getting windows ready"

#

this might take long

terse quartz
#

bleh

#

what make is ur laptop

#

@vestal vessel

vestal vessel
#

im in bios now

terse quartz
#

excellent

#

is there a Security section

#

u want to go there and ensure secure boot is turned off

#

and if it shows an option to boot with Mok manager, turn that off as well

vestal vessel
#

secure boot is off

#

i dont see that optiuon

terse quartz
#

ok ... next thing is check under start or boot category

#

and turn off Quick boot or fast boot

#

the next thing after that is put the boot order to be UEFI USB at the top of the list

vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

there should be headers .. see the bios navigation tips on the side

vestal vessel
#

i cant switch the category selection

terse quartz
#

pg up/dn might switch headers/categories

#

or Esc comes out of the current category

#

then arrows

vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

just careful pg up/dn didnt accidentally switch a setting

vestal vessel
#

i cant find quick boot

#

or fast boot

terse quartz
#

can i have a look.. can u send a photo?

vestal vessel
#

what do u want me to take a picture of

terse quartz
#

the BIOS screen at the boot category

vestal vessel
#

theres Main Security System Confiurationa nd Exit

terse quartz
#

whichever of those four ^ has the boot order and options

vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

great, adjust the boot hotkey delay to 3

vestal vessel
#

oh its the thing im highlihgitng

terse quartz
#

it's the first thing in the pic

vestal vessel
#

theres only 0, 10, 15 options for the hotkey delay

terse quartz
#

put to 10 then. everything else looks good, make sure ur Mint USB in inserted, then hit F10 to save and exit..

vestal vessel
#

ook

#

same problem

terse quartz
#

try diff usb port

#

that USB stick is the one u just remade for mint iso with Etcher right?

vestal vessel
#

yeh

#

still same thing after using different port

terse quartz
#

i think i know why it isnt.. let's check on it in Windows

vestal vessel
#

it owrked once

#

i just didnt finish the install and exit back to windows

terse quartz
#

Unplug the USB, boot to Windows as usual, then plug in the stick, then open Disk Managemt

vestal vessel
#

and since then it doesnt work

terse quartz
vestal vessel
#

it shows as nothing for disk 2

#

disk 1

terse quartz
#

the usb must be in

vestal vessel
#

8it is

terse quartz
#

well there's your problem

#

the 114.6 GB usb drive (drive E:) aka Disk 1 has nothing on it.. except a lousy puny 5 MB EFI partition on it

#

there's no mint iso there at all

vestal vessel
#

why so

terse quartz
#

let's fix this quickly, shall we

#

get the Windows .zip file in the Downloads section of that site

#

save it to ur Downloads folder on Windows

vestal vessel
#

im thinking of trying to install unbuntu and fix it

terse quartz
#

u need a good loader software to do tht

terse quartz
#

read the opening paragraph there

#

besides that article u posted from reddit is for MS Surface, and they're always a bugger

vestal vessel
#

i have ventory downloaded

terse quartz
#

which file u got

vestal vessel
#

ventoy 1.0.96 windows

terse quartz
#

ok

#

unzip the file

vestal vessel
#

i did

terse quartz
#

ok go into that ventoy folder (NOT into the zip) and find the ventoy2disk.exe file

vestal vessel
#

yeh

terse quartz
#

then run it, and click the options menu in it

#

in the options> Paritions> choose GPT

#

Secure boot should be already on checked.

vestal vessel
#

yeh

terse quartz
#

then it should show the name and size and drive letter of ur usb drive at the top

vestal vessel
#

Device?

terse quartz
#

yes

vestal vessel
#

yeh

terse quartz
#

ur usb is about 115GB n should show as E: correct?

vestal vessel
#

yeh

terse quartz
#

make SURE u picked GPT in the options of partition style

#

then click Install

#

takes short short time

vestal vessel
#

done

terse quartz
#

ok close the ventoy2disk installer

#

close everything on desktop

#

open fresh file manager.. find the Mint iso u have saved

#

right click it, pick Copy

#

then in same file manager go into Drive E: (should now show labelled as VENTOY) and right click in the space and do PASTE

vestal vessel
#

its gonna take a bit of time

terse quartz
#

it's copying ya

#

u can now also saved other regular files to the usb once the iso is finished.. in fact, u can download rn on Windows, an Ubuntu iso as well (I highly recommend Ubuntu Budgie) and copy it to the ventoy drive as well.. or u can skip getting Ubuntu and try to boot straight away from the Ventoy Stick to the Mint iso

#

@vestal vessel ...

vestal vessel
#

i just want mint

#

and i have no use for that flash drive

terse quartz
#

k. is it finished coppying?

vestal vessel
#

no its not done

terse quartz
#

well that drive is useful to put backups onto

#

which it now can hold since Ventoy doesnt lock up the space on the whole stick for one iso

#

and there's no files u want to keep from ur current Windows drive/install?

vestal vessel
#

no files i wanna keep

terse quartz
#

k

#

it should be done by now

vestal vessel
#

nah its still ntop done yet

terse quartz
#

when u restart with the usb u should be presented with a Ventoy white screen about 5 or 6 seconds after the power on manufacturer logo

#

from there u pick the first ISO (which is the only ISO, Mint) and start normal

#

just give the thing enough time to finish.. if there's a light on the drive, ensure it stops flashing totally before reboot

vestal vessel
#

so i open bios again check the usb

#

then save and then ventoy should show up?

terse quartz
vestal vessel
#

well i had to switch back to Windows boot

terse quartz
#

remember u already saved the Boot Order

terse quartz
#

oh @vestal vessel can u check one thing after it finishes copying?

vestal vessel
#

too late im shutting laptop down

terse quartz
#

k

#

tag me if any issues, it should go now

vestal vessel
#

im in a blue screen

#

Perofrm MOK management is the title

#

options are

Continue Boot
Enroll MOK
Enroll key from disk
Enroll hash from disk

#

@terse quartz

terse quartz
#

continue boot

vestal vessel
#

then click enter on linux?

terse quartz
#

this is that 'turn OFF mok management' thing i told u to check for earlier in the BIOS

#

yeah

#

well u should hve gotten the Ventoy screen

#

the white/blue ventoy loader page

vestal vessel
#

should i boot in normal mode

vestal vessel
#

mint logo shows

terse quartz
#

good let it load.. should take one minute, 10 seconds from the time u hit enter

#

roughly

vestal vessel
#

im in

#

should i press on the install linux mint disk icon

terse quartz
#

no

#

what u should do, is plug in headphones/ speakers

#

run a web browser.. set up wifi

#

check ALL of that first that it works

#

this is the proving stage

vestal vessel
#

touch screen works

#

wifi works,

#

headphones work

terse quartz
#

oooo

#

touch pad?

vestal vessel
#

yeah that works

terse quartz
#

see the browser, make sure it renders videos properly on screen

vestal vessel
#

well my touchpad is broken

terse quartz
#

oh ok

vestal vessel
#

sort of. it sometimes works and i dont think its software problem

terse quartz
#

i guess ur using a mouse

vestal vessel
#

i use the touch screen for the most part

terse quartz
#

ahhh

#

well it's great that Mint picked it up easily!

#

does laptop have built-in bluetooth?

vestal vessel
#

yeah it does

terse quartz
#

test taht

#

connect a device

vestal vessel
#

im trying to i can see devics but i dont see my bluetooth speaker

terse quartz
#

does it already show a BT symbol near the clock?

vestal vessel
#

nvm i found the bluetooth speakers

#

i see the bt symbol in the taskbar

terse quartz
#

ur speaker is hidden n needs to be on "advertise" mode

vestal vessel
#

yeah near the clock

terse quartz
#

anyway so far so good

vestal vessel
#

all the possible connections just disapear

terse quartz
#

put ur speaker in pairing mode.. then hit the Search button in that window

vestal vessel
#

no i know

#

just all bluetooth devices disapear

#

including roomates and neighbors

terse quartz
#

idk maybe it refreshing

#

did u manage to pair it?

vestal vessel
#

no

#

i found it but couldnt pair

terse quartz
#

right, so uh close that window, try again

#

or hit the little red x at bottom

vestal vessel
#

yeah i cant find the headphones anymore

terse quartz
#

they were working before?

vestal vessel
#

no

#

theyshowed up before but never worked

#

ok connected

terse quartz
#

oh if they showed up n paired, then that's a matter of setting the sound mixer to choose them

vestal vessel
#

what is annoying that everything else disapears

#

press search
things show up
idles
things disapear one by one

#

eh whatever

#

sound does go through speakers

terse quartz
#

now?

#

hey hey

vestal vessel
#

yeah it works

#

lemme try the laptop speakers itself

terse quartz
#

well. anything else u can think of that you'd wanna operate/ test now?

#

yeah open the volume mixer

#

(right click the volume icon, > sound settings

vestal vessel
#

yeah i switched to the laptop speakers

vestal vessel
#

not sure if theres anything else i wanna tyr

terse quartz
#

see how if it feels snappy opening up a browser the second time, and navigating to an intensive web page

#

like even loading Youtube homepage is rather intensive these days

vestal vessel
#

yeah opening up firefox is rly fasst

terse quartz
#

the 2nd time it def is.. cuz of cached memory

vestal vessel
#

comparfed to me opening up chrome on windows it takes 3 seconds atleast and thats when the laptop has been runing for a bit

#

when the lapto just started running it takes liek 30 seconds

terse quartz
#

ya first time it's long cuz of on a slow usb

#

well if ur happy to install, then go ahead..

#

just have it do the erase disk and install mint

vestal vessel
#

alright

#

also there seems to be the linux mint file on my desktop

terse quartz
#

at the VERY end, it'll prompt u do reboot

vestal vessel
#

should i check the box for Install multimedia codecs

terse quartz
#

and if u choose restart now, it will then show on a black screen with mint logo : please eject the media (pull out ur usb drive), then hit enter

terse quartz
#

gives u more codecs to handle dvd n other file formats

vestal vessel
#

"Unmount partitions that are in use?"

terse quartz
#

sure

vestal vessel
#

"the installler has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions:

/dev/sdb

terse quartz
#

unmount

vestal vessel
#

uh nothing visually changed

terse quartz
#

s-ok

vestal vessel
#

im back at the checkbox for "install multimedia codecs" and the "continue" button is greyed out

terse quartz
#

kek.. ah shizzz.

#

ok lets get it straight which disk is which...

vestal vessel
#

i also noticed the linux mint file on the desktop earliuer disapeared

#

the cursor turned into the loading circle

terse quartz
#

lets try again.. open Disks app from the menu

vestal vessel
#

in mint?

terse quartz
#

it'll show what is sda n what is sdb

#

ya

vestal vessel
#

the disks app?

terse quartz
#

mhm

#

in accessories

vestal vessel
#

1.0 TB Hard Disk (/dev/sda)
123 GB Drive (/dev/sdb)

terse quartz
#

there u go.

#

well. try to mount sdb again.. click the drive, click the exfat big part, and hit the play button

#

then cancel installer n run it again

vestal vessel
#

uh the installer changed

terse quartz
#

oh maybe it's fine now

#

what step it on?

vestal vessel
#

its at a different page and says'This computer currently has windows boot manager on it. what would u like to do?

terse quartz
#

is this the page where u can erase disk and just install Mint?

vestal vessel
#

yeh

terse quartz
#

there u go

vestal vessel
#

Select Drive

#

im selecting the 1 Tb one right

terse quartz
#

drive for the bootloader? or for linux? in both cases.. the 1 TB one

vestal vessel
#

uh

#

it just says Erase diska nd install linux mint

terse quartz
#

yep ..proceed with the next

vestal vessel
#

ok now i just wait

#

says Copying files...should i just skip that if i have nothing important on windows

terse quartz
#

no no

vestal vessel
#

okok

terse quartz
#

it's installing lol

#

on a hard drive might take half hour

#

maybe bit less

vestal vessel
#

aight time to chill

terse quartz
#

caffee

#

😄

vestal vessel
#

ah yes

#

i havent ate dinner yet too

terse quartz
#

... get on then

#

as long as ur pc has power cord

vestal vessel
#

laptop

#

and im using a computer to text u for the whole time

terse quartz
#

make sure plugged to power while installing

vestal vessel
#

it has

terse quartz
#

ya i'd say it's safe to leave it then n grab some food

vestal vessel
#

installation dfinished

#

you can continue testing linux mint not but u can restart the computer

#

@terse quartz just restart at this point right

terse quartz
#

yep

vestal vessel
#

nice

terse quartz
#

remove the usb media

#

no need to reenter bios really

vestal vessel
#

please remove the installation medium then press enter

#

im guessing the usb stick

terse quartz
#

...

vestal vessel
#

woooo

terse quartz
#

hurrah

#

mark post solved.. and watch youtube vids on some of the first things to do after installing Mint.

#

save ur ventoy stick too. it's a recovery disk, and usable for other iso's too (multiboot) and for perhaps backup files

vestal vessel
#

uh its my roomates

#

so i gotta return it lol. im ggetting my own stick tmw

#

how do i mark as solved

terse quartz
#

go to the title, and edit tags

vestal vessel
#

done

terse quartz
#

do u want to clear ventoy?

#

return as factory fresh?

vestal vessel
#

the stick?

terse quartz
#

ya

vestal vessel
#

nah can i just delete it

terse quartz
#

or wait a day maybe.. just incase u need it

vestal vessel
#

i mean im getting a stick tmw

#

so i dont think it matters too much

terse quartz
#

well if u want to clear the ventoy loader, it needs the ventoy installer to clear it

vestal vessel
#

o h

terse quartz
#

or.. u can download gparted in ur new mint, then format the whole stick over to Fat32 or w/e

#

explore the Software Manager, it's a great place to start, just make sure u click it's upper menu and do > refresh package information first

vestal vessel
#

how heavy is ventoy

terse quartz
#

not at all

#

u could just leave it and delete the ISO file.. unless ur roomate leaves it in to boot up with, they wont notice

vestal vessel
#

im sure they wont care lol

#

i mean they gave the stick to me without anything on it

#

like they never used it

terse quartz
#

anyway ur initial issue was that you didn't flash the stick correctly

#

hence it was unbootable

vestal vessel
#

i mean the first time i did it ti worked

#

idk why second boot up didnt work and i tried reflashing it still doesnt work

terse quartz
#

then the third time as we saw, it put nothing on it 😛

#

ventoy is just a lot easier

#

run the app, set the style, install. then copy/paste

vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

usually doesnt affect Etcher, but ...

#

something was messing the the USB stick's EFI n all

vestal vessel
#

i dont think fast startup was an option in my bios

terse quartz
vestal vessel
#

oh that?

terse quartz
#

mhm

vestal vessel
#

ahhh ok

terse quartz
#

it's especially treacherous on dual- or triple- boots

vestal vessel
#

aight hopefully my t460 thinkpad comes tomorrow

terse quartz
#

what this gonna be ur linux computer for exploring?

vestal vessel
#

i can fully go beserk and explore linux on this laptop and i will keep a stable release linux mint on the t460 thinkpad

vestal vessel
terse quartz
#

mkay

vestal vessel
#

then my pc is windows

terse quartz
#

i c ic

#

good plan

terse quartz
vestal vessel
#

ah good point

terse quartz
#

alight i'll leave u it.. enjoy urself .. chat anytime in general

mossy falcon
#

So I had this problem since I shut down linux demo edition on the drive without installing it, and turning off the PC before removing the drive.

#

I reformatted the drive and used rufus multiple times

#

But I can't boot without this error popping up

#

So mmx64.efi is not being made when I burn through rufus

blissful mist
#

@terse quartz did you solve the issue ?
