#Stuck at grub
245 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
tell us more about your system. Is it doing this after you installed Mint and it was working fine? is it a Dual-boot system? what recent changes happened that may have caused this?
Grub does this when it cannot find any viable boot option. So as Stunner says, we need more information to work with, other than "PC ded".
At the grub> type normal
-Installed linux mint with full wipe
-laptop got shut down by mistake (no battery potato laptop)
- won't boot cuz filesystem damaged?
- did fsck -y(didn't fix it)
- used usb stick with mint in it to open terminal and fix with fsck(it said everything is fine)
- rebooted to grub
- used usb stick again to update grub(throws error)
- tried youtube tuts to fix , didn't help
- finally here
oh ok. so if the filesystem is not damaged, try running boot-repair program from the live session
or u may have done fsck wrong from the live usb..
-in live startup.. go to desktop, open terminal, type lsblk to see all disks and their dev names
Wait, laptop shut down by mistake? Was that during the setup?
- in live session desktop, open file manager, and click the ssd or hard drive that has the installed Mint on it. (this mounts that drive easily so the system can check it)
- go back in terminal and say for example that Mint system is on /dev/sdb2.. .then type
fsck /dev/sdb2
can also try the same step sdb1 as that is partition 1 of sdb, which likely has a FAT32 filesystem for EFI (bootloader)
ie - fsck /dev/sdb1
but u have to know what the installed OS disk is called in linux precisely..... Check Disks app it will tell device names if u dont like what lsblk shows
it might be nvme0 something if ur ursing nvme drive
@short granite
sample:
I don't use UEFI, so there's no EFI partition on disk. in your case fsck both the efi partition, and the mint partition.
one at a time
No didn't do it wrong. I checked it with fdisk -l
No not during the installation
i couldnt find any help on fsck -y from --help
but anyway, run it on the EFI partition of that disk with the install. it should be a fat32
heck run it again on the mint one too with the syntax i wrote (change to ur drive device name as appropriate)
like this
if filesys check finds no errors anywhere, and the boot issue persists, then run the boot repair app from live mode.
single boot no Windows?
Nop no windows
exit n reformat the drive
use gparted
in the live environment
make it ext4 format
Yup done it
Then i made efi, swap and ext4 partition and then it fails while installing
Aight
any interesting results?
ah a slow hard drive. and already 7264 bad sectors
and that's only 10% of the way into the test XD
likely. let it finish
Can we fix it?
well i figure let it finish. it should mark bad sectors. then u can try to install OS again
Okay thanks a lot T.T
take a snapshot at the end of the test.. also scroll down, i think it tells more stuff
i can see it's been power-cycled over 6200 times.. it must be many years old
For what it's worth, that failure profile looks like from one of those "I die after 2 years and one week" Seagate Barracudas they put into OEM boxes a lot. You should mentally prepare for this drive to pass into legend soon.
@still nova you mean the hybrid HDDs?
No, regular Seagate Barracuda spindle drives, cheapest of the cheap. For a while, they were in 80% of all OEM PCs, and they very regularly died in their third year, since warranty only ran for two years. I have replaced a lot of them with SSDs.
It's been 7-8 years i think
⚰️
I was thinking the same
there may be other utilities u could use to comb over the drive , but idk if u wanna bother
dont buy too cheap a brand
ADATA is quite decent n not overpriced
n look for one that includes a DRAM cache
I already have a pc but I'm trying to make this laptop so i can take it to places
Just for work
is there any other drive?
Nope just this
does it have a memory card reader?
Umm
Wait I'll show the model
Mine is 8gb ram variant
I could show u a way to run it in the mean time, no hard drive
Will it be cheaper?
yeah but just for a while
Okay that would be helpful
just like if u need the laptop to check facebook or check an email or even log in here
;-;
what was the last linux distro u were using?
Well i need for coding but i guess if i can use the terminal and browser, I'll be fine
yeah this method would work for that, but please dont leave so many browser tabs open huh
I tried installing linux mint xfce this one but failed
Before i used to use linux mint cinnamon
ok mint xfce would be fine
Yeah I don't usually
so u'll need another computer to prepare a mint stick with persistence
Persistence?
yeah
I already have xfce on the usb stick
it's a method to save sessions in a live environment
Oh
is the stick made with ventoy?
I used belena etcher to flash it
I don't understand..wdym
oh if u dont know then u didnt use it
Probably
do u have another pc to remake ur stick?
Yep i do
check out this page
https://pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
this Persistence thing (as shown in step 4 there) works on Ubuntu-based distros.. which applies to Mint
u can use that to reflash the stick with the proper ISO image, then set UP TO 4 GiB of persistence on it
Only that much storage I'll be able to use to store data?
maybe just do 2 or 2.5 .. it takes less time to create it
some of that space obviously will go to browser cache.. but a lot still available for some pictures, ur save documents etc
What about softwares like postman/Slack?
but I also recommend saving to google-drive or OneDrive ur MOST important data simply because well .. just cuz
how big those apps?
Flatpack are huge(over 1gb?) but snaps are smaller i think
forget those then
So just web based then?
but for any online work yeah u'll have access.. it'll remember ur website cookies, etc
u can even install a diff wallpaper or theme
and it will remember the next time u boot to that stick
it takes about 4-5 minutes for the program to flash the ISO, then about 10-15 minutes to flash the persistent drive space.. then it's done
three or 4
If i use more tabs will it crash?
no but it may slow to a crawl
Ah
then maybe crash .. cuz the more junk cache (cashe is disk data) it needs to store, the more hard it makes the USB flash memory work to write/record it
on a portable SSD, it's no issue at all, but on a basic usb stick u gotta run light
u can give it a spin for a day or two.. up to u.
Hmm understandable
I just wanna make it work until winter is over
After that I'll be fine working from my pc room
im trying to remember what Linux Lite is based on
Cuz it's too cold in there and i just want to work sitting under sunlight at daylight ;-;
Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu, and would also work for this
and i have used it.. it's pretty darn zippy
and uses the xfce environment
this is meant for Windows to set up a USB stick.. so idk if u have that
oh i have another easy way too if ur interested
that may give a little better performance
but that depends on if ur hard drive is up to the job
I have both windows and Linux on pc so it's fine
I think it's gone for good
It's super slow
can u write any files to it at all (say from a live session)
Tbh i wouldn't trust it
i cant remember if u tried reformatting it or not
Yep i reformatted
Everything
I have to get a separate usb stick for this
u know what u should try rn. download mx linux.
how fast is ur internet download speeds usually?
go here, get this iso (the xfce version) downloaded onto ur Windows computer
idk if ur tired or not
Have to get a usb first
but i was gonna show u a way to turn ur existing USB into a multiboot drive
Isn't that overkill?
if it's already 8 GB or more, it could hold MX, Mint xfce, AND linux lite all at once
ok then if u wanna try mx it has a way to pick from the boot menu (says hit the F5 key for persistence) then that saves (and u make the save file.. 3 to 5 GB on ur hard drive.
and give it a test run like that..
if u REALLY REALLY dont trust ur hard drive at all anymore, then instead, get Linux Lite, and use that link above pendrivelinux.com - Universal USB installer to make the usb stick itself persistent
What's the difference between mx linux and linux lite?
however mx can do its own persistent save (even if u flashed it with Etcher, lets say) but it needs a bit of space on the hard drive
Oh i see
by a bit of space.. i mean anywhere from a GB or two, up to 12, say
I've been stuck on installing mint for past few days and i think it's time the hdd to sleep
hehe
Can i take out the hdd?
ya aight then. well just be sure to save all ur very important stuff to cloud storage in case the persistent usb jams up bad..
Yeah makes sense
until u get a new internal drive.
and yes u can take it out
good to see the size n connector.
it's probably 2.5" SATA
the Disks app would tell u full details if u booted live, and checkd the app
Means i shouldn't move it..?
no i meant the usb thing can hold u over til u buy a new internal drive
alright cya gn
That thing came in a hundred different configurations, but it always had an SD-Card reader, so you could also just work off of an SD card. Install software into the persistent volume, then put your data on SD. If the thing is reasonably fast, this should do in a pinch. https://www.asus.com/laptops/for-home/everyday-use/asus-x540/techspec/
hi @short granite any updates?
Not really, i used the linux mint only in the usb to get some work done
I haven't had the time to log on windows and get linux lite on the stick yet
oh ok np
should get it n take for a spin
Looks fine to me. Problem is when i load up windows, i only play games and forget about everything else
If there was a linux software for flashing linux lite to usb
Would definitely do it right away
@short granite have you tried Ventoy?
nop
it's available from Ventoy.net for either Windows or Linux. if u get the linux version, then get the tar.gz file from its downloads section. i believe latest version is 1.096
@short granite I highly recommend that you use Ventoy when youhave a usb boot drive. it will make your life a lot easier
Oki will do 👍
heya!
heyy
Heyas~ did everything work out in the end?
wanna see a pic of my Lite? I put the Chicago transform pack on it
the Chicago95 / Chicago Fire project
transform?
theme pack?
then after a long while on that, I just changed the style back to Adapta Nokto dark
yes.
dyum sure show
wtf
what?
nooo don't go back to windows ;-;
aside the joke
looks pretty intresting
i didn't know u could change terminal theme too
retro windows setup
I still remember when somebody wrote in an old forum: Stop using Windows. Come to Linux, and start using doors, like normal people.
heh
Just pictured Principal Skinner using the window in 'Steamed Hams' to go grab Krusty burgers
xD
👋

nothing new except for palworld
it looks like a fun, cute game. Did u get a gaming computer now?
how are you playing it?
I have a pc with 1050ti
