#GPU works extremely slow in LM21 compared to win7, which drivers do i need?
65 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I have a ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5678 with 1 GB Video RAM and 8 GB main Ram (which is sufficient for the games i play in windows 7).
But in Linux Mint 21, i get very slow performance, compared to the windows game performance. Less than 20% in some cases.
i mean, i dont need 100% of the same performance in Linux, i would be happy if i can get 70-80% of it, that would already be a huge change.
GPU works extremely slow in LM21 compared to win7, which drivers do i need?
Not the gpu, but 3D games which use the GPU are extremely slow, compared to their windows-performance.
As i tested many games, the issue must be in the driver, not in a single game.
I even tried to install Kisak's Mesa drivers, but APT refuses to install these drivers :(
After adding Kisak's PPA properly, i did ```$ sudo apt upgrade
But only get this: ```The following packages have been kept back:
distro-info distro-info-data libegl-mesa0 libgbm1 libgl1-mesa-dri libglapi-mesa libglx-mesa0 libllvm15 libosmesa6
mesa-va-drivers mesa-vulkan-drivers
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded.
```what could cause APT to behave like this?
ok now i try something new: ```$ sudo apt full-upgrade
...
hm, still no luck: $ glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version" OpenGL version string: 4.5 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 23.0.4-0ubuntu1~22.04.1(Mesa driver unchanged, Kisak not installed)
Would it work, if i upgrade to the next point release of 21.2?
(i was hesitant to upgrade that, and waited)
You have to change a file to bypass phased updates
Oh, i dont want to risk breaking anything!
It should only then force installing the drivers, if it was the phased-release blocking it, not if it was a serious blocking.
are these even safe to be installed?
https://www.linuxcapable.com/how-to-upgrade-mesa-drivers-on-linux-mint/
so, is the "kept back"-message harmless in that case?
can i instead install these 11 packages manually?
which file? can i change it just for the Kisak-Mesa and then revert it to its original state?
I don't think it applies for things like kisak-mesa
But APT gets blocked, i need to unblock it, to be able to properly install these new Mesa drivers.
Which method should i use, manual install for each of the 11 packages?
Should i try this one instead?
https://launchpad.net/~kisak/+archive/ubuntu/turtle/
Is there a risk if i use this command to install them manually?
sudo apt-get install <package>
No risk to install that way
update and then upgrade
anytime u add a PPA u got to do update command to refresh available software list
hm, i installed it: ```$ glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"
OpenGL version string: 4.5 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 23.3.2 - kisak-mesa PPA
Now testing...
upgrade command alters EVERY piece of installed sw to latest in repos
hm, now the games dont start at all
looking into console-start..
hm, steam games dont work, but non-steam games seem still to work?
how can i start steam games via console?
oh.. would i need to reboot steam/linux?
(in console i was able to start a steam game)
idk if you can
ok i rebooted, but what happened to my steam icons in my linux menu?
all game icons vanished, even steam icon itself
but the non-steam icons are all still there
do i need to reinstall steam?
So i did the following:
- replaced ubuntu mesa drivers with Kisak mesa drivers
- updated and upgraded packages, and tested that it was really replaced
- rebooted LM21
Changes: all steam and steam-games start-links in LM startmenu are gone.
How can i start steam manually over console?
the steam platform, i mean, how can i start it from the LM console?
```Is this ok?
ok now i try ./setup.sh of steam...
'steam' doesnt work either so i do sudo snap install steam
hm, i could get a double installation?
but all this, just because i installed the Kisak-drivers of Mesa? this is so strange
oof, now i have the following:
have Steam installed (using a snap package), the platform started ok, i logged in, but all my games are shown as grey, not installed.
Though they are installed in my original (non-snap) steam, which i'm unable to start.
do i need to migrate each game, one by one? hm i could test a 3D game to see if anything has changed...
can you go back to before all the changes with a TimeShift save?
Incidentally, do your new graphics drivers run the games you can access any better than before?
oof, that would be the second worst solution :(
(the worst being a full reinstall of LM21)
I'm currently installing a 3D title to test it (it will be double-installed, as that old steam installation got defunct for now)
People need to be warned to make a Timeshift backup before installing these Kisak-Mesa drivers, apparently.
i didnt do it, as i thought that package was a professional updated driver :/
seems, the guy behind it hadn't tested for that case :(
Actually, this option isn't as bad as i first thought, my latest timeshift backup is from mid of november, and as my whole Steam-installation got ruined by this crappy Kisak driver (and the snap-steam doesnt work, too), i'm forced to go that route tomorrow. I'm glad, that i made that backup back then (i have only 2 timeshift-backups as the process is extremely slow and i make backups only when i feel the need to have a new one).
Will do that tomorrow, as it's way past 2am here already. Thanks all for the help.
alright np
(So people, think twice before installing Kisak's drivers and/or make timeshift-backup.)
there may be a safer and more efficient way than going that Kisak route. Someone else may know it
...steam is gone? odd...?????
just re-install steam the same way you initially installed it. Preferably that means downloading the .deb from https://steampowered.com and installing that
Even more oddly: the installation was still there, only the start icons were gone and starting it manually over console didnt work, then i installed steam by snap package, and now the game icons are back in the start menu but when i click them, steam asks me to install them, so i have a hybrid installation now :/
How can i uninstall snap-steam, without damaging my old steam installation? (i need to do that, because timeshift doesnt revert the /home directory)
