#what happened to the normal os
313 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
before it was the normal desktop with the panel on the bottom,
like the wallpaper was default and everything
share system specs
that's not how mint looks by default
that's literally gnome desktop
exactly. All i did was reboot and i didnt change settings
It looks like you may have messed with the dock settings.
mint doesn't do that by itself
could i uninstall it?
mint has no dock
it uses a bottom panel on all it's flavors
so you admit you installed gnome?
i have no idea maybe i did
Maybe do a fresh install? Idk if you didn't touch settings, that's weird. I've installed Mint a few times and have not seen that
because it's either that, or something that messed up cinnamon
bruh... how we would know then?
wait ill link the thing i used
Yeah that would be very helpful actually. (I don't mean that in a harsh tone at all lol)
also @crisp dirge needs to share system specs
the more they elaborate, the better solution
if you say, I got an error, how to fix? dont expect a solution

yeah one sec
Oh yeah, @crisp dirge please go into terminal and type neofetch into the terminal and hit enter. It will show you a graphic of your system specs. Take a picture of that and send it here please. It will be super helpful.
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/472398/can-i-make-middle-mouse-scrolling-on-linux-behave-more-like-autoscrolling-on-win
also i installed a clipboard manager called gclip or gpaste or something of the sort
it says DE Gnome 42.9 in it so i think i installed gnome
notices gclip
yeah, it may have also pulled the entire gnome desktop with it as dependency or something
i hit y for all dependencies i remember that
Huh that's weird but yeah if you're on Gnome then yeah it probably installed the whole DE (Desktop Environment)
then that explains it
can i uninstall it or just fresh install
Ah yeah that would do it lol
No worries though, I've done stuff like that too lmao
you did a Linus sebastian moment, yes, do as I say
im gullible like that
so it got the whole gnome meta package group with it, breaking cinnamon
kinda the dependency hell
should i reinstall cinnamon then or could i just fix this
remove the gnome desktop , not working? reinstall mint (if no data is needed to backup)
sorry, I'm a bit sleepy so
if you ever mess up, do a timeshift backup beforehand
Yeah try uninstalling Gnome first and if that still leaves you with a broken Cinnamon DE then you'll want a fresh install
sorry for asking this but uhh... how?
i dont wanna brick cinnamon my uninstalling all os s or smthn like that
need a flash drive, mint cinnamon iso and ventoy
i have it
you need to check what are the packages related to gnome
@keen jewel I'm a sleepy head rn, help em about getting rid of gnome desktop
fresh install i can do but gnome i got no clue
Here let me read up on the commands for a minute
take ur time
I'm grabbing them off a Stack Exchange post
use the fresh install as last resort
I can't guide you with the gnome removal, can't think that much rn due to sleep
I believe you want to remove all Gnome dependencies that got dragged in
yeah np, thanks for the help so far
yup, because one package made a dependency bucle/hell , dragging the whole gnome desktop with it it seems
I would try to remove the conflicting package, then check what other dependencies are around to remove those as well
Try sudo apt-get remove --purge gnome*
That should remove absolutely every file installed by Gnome. Not trying to be a copypasta here but you can also read the post I'm reading too
also try to restore cinnamon desktop config files

btw, using terminal is not that hard nor different from using windowz powershell @crisp dirge
Also I am as well a bit tired because it's 2am here lol
@summer fractal they tried to fix autoscroll
ends installing whole gnome desktop by accident
didnt use powershell much
I mean, official MS guides also do make use of terminal/PS
Also to refresh Cinnamon couldn't you use sudo apt reinstall cinnamon or am I just making shit up?
Yea looks like hell
dependency hell be like
gonna reboot after this
one sec
get gnome'd 🌈
Probably the first time I've seen Linux Mint running Gnome tbh lol
other users have tried already, but been told to not do that to avoid breaking mint
guess i taught you something :D
PopOS uses older versions of Gnome tho
just as example
How'd the reboot go?
Oh fs. Older Gnome is just missing some features I like from newer Gnome lol
But I uses KDE rn
the boot screen and lock screen is back to normal
then it says
unable to launch "cinnamon-session-cinnamon" X session---
"cinnamon-session-cinnamon" not found; falling back to default session
then its black screen
yall wtf did you tell this guy to do
may need a reinstall of cinnamon
so ig repair cinnamon with bootable media (if thats possible)?
read the convo
Alright so Gnome is gone but now Cinnamon needs to be fixed
no need, just use TTY
Does the black screen give you an option to run commands?
yeah he was stuck in gnome for some reason
retrobro can help ya , pyon
nope
Cause you might be able to run sudo apt reinstall cinnamon
im there
the TTY is your backup terminal if you ever run into issues
Ngl I couldn't help on my own lol
I know some stuff but other stuff like entering TTY I wouldn't know lol
and you're a dev? bruh

this @crisp dirge
Try sudo apt reinstall cinnamon
fullscreen terminal
install it then
I have yet to have come across a need for TTY apparently lol
it says its gonna delete everything
screw it we ball
Well then change the reinstall to install maybe lol
learning TTY is a must, it will get you out of hell
how does one accidentally remove cinamon and install gnome
wdym
Gclip lmao
pop os apt disaster 2.0
dependency hell, you get a gnome package, drags the whole gnome desktop and conflicts/breaks cinnamon
looks like its gonna remove the os before installing or something
Gsniped
send a shot
one sce
i have cinnamon and gnome peacefully coexisting on my system
also dependency hell is the main reason i resort to flatpak or nix sometimes lmao
Idk why it wants to delete the os lol
that's odd
my experience with plasma on mint has been awful tbh
literally this
yea
theres a bunch more files to the right but it didnt seem important
like wallpapers and such
Also @crisp dirge just to be clear Linux Mint and Cinnamon are two separate things. Linux Mint is the actual OS and Cinnamon is just the desktop environment. So when you install Linux Mint Cinnamon off your USB stick you're just installing the version of Linux Mint that comes bundled with Cinnamon. This is more just an educational little tidbit to explain the difference cause for a bit I didn't know that lol
most probably will remove gnome traces
y then?
it can't go wrong, right?
i got nothing to lose ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@summer fractal debian god, share your wisdom
its done but like nothing happened. reboot again or try to reinstall?
Your USB flash drive is always your backup lol
just get cinnamon back
Try sudo apt install cinnamon now unless you already did that
systemctl status lightdm
to check if lightdm is still around as service
lightdm is what allows you to login through a GUI
active running
then reboot
Awesome
should run lightdm then cinnamon
if you still are missing packages, get the other related to cinnamon from TTY
yep its working
Les go!
Any other issues pop up or does everything seem normal?
see? fixing mint is ez
as long you have TTY around, you can fix it like a gigachad
seems normal
walk in the park 😎
Awesome! That was a little roundabout but I'm glad it worked. Technically in this instance you could have also fresh installed the whole OS but it's good to know how to do this or navigate this kind of stuff when you have files you want to save lol
whilte on windowz, well... it tries to fix itself... ends failing... gives no reason why it failed.
and not always can be fixed
now make a timeshift snapshot
as a way to prevent breakage
Yeah, Linux is a lot easier to fix yourself as long as you know what you're doing. Windows is a bit harder to fiddle with fixing.
trust me, I loved windows since 1998, but I have my reasons to no longer like it, and like more mint, having an ez way to fix issues like yours is one of em
I also recommend this. It allows you to basically have a backup of a previous version of your system so if this happened again it would be as easy as loading up the snapshot
timeshift is like system restore, you f- up, you go back in time babe
did the timeshift
is there a specific language that we're running in the terminal that i can try learning to get a better understanding or is it just predetermined incomprehensible computer jargon
mint uses bash by default
It's just general Linux terminal commands
It's not a programming language.
Definitely good to learn. Hell dude even I'm still learning some of the terminal commands but I'm just more used to it now lol
bash is kinda a scripting language, but it's just the default linux shell
it's just like how cmd works on windowz
same for PS
got it
In Linux, process automation relies heavily on shell scripting. This involves creating a file containing a series of commands that can be executed together. In this article, we'll start with the basics of bash scripting which includes variables, commands, inputs/ outputs, and debugging. We'll also see examples of each along
but bash is more powerful than cmd
I just use zsh because the plugins and makes terminal life ez
just like CMD, you don't need to become a bash gigachad, just learn the basics
and mint enforces using GUi so
but using the terminal is good, as you can see, it will get you out of hell
but it can also get me into hell seems like
it won't if you know what are you doing
gotta be careful about installing all dependencies lol
Also just a helpful tip, the keyword sudo stands for "superuser do" and basically elevates your privileges. It can allow you to do powerful stuff but that also means dangerous. That's why it requires your password for commands starting with sudo. If you don't know what a sudo command does, try to find out first.
then you can just go back in time with timeshift from the mint usb
fun fact: I miss TTY every time I'm forced to use windowz
sounds like admin commands then. although superuser do sounds way cooler
#762787812184555530 must read
Yep basically.
ah yes. travelling across dimensions and time. only possible with linux :D
you may like to read archwiki as well for in depth info
archwiki is kinda the linux bible, followed by gentoo wiki
Arch wiki is not just for Arch Linux btw lol
if you have a BTRFS partition, you can go even beyond
figured that out earlier
lemme figure out these 3 first lol
also @keen jewel what did you use for the mouse btw
now, make the snapshot and try again
if you made the snapshot, even if you screw up, now you can go back in time
should the snapshot be on a pendrive or sm?
cuz like i couldnt access the gui before
unless you can do it through terminal
you probably can im on linux
Honestly right now I am still figuring that out lol
I am trying to get Piper to work because it supports both of our mice but for me it doesn't see my mouse. You can try to install it yourself however and see if it works for you.
https://github.com/libratbag/piper
just remember to make the snapshot
n or y to dependencies? 😅
you don't want mint to break again
aight im going in
What are you installing right now? Dependencies are usually necessary but in that case you ended up with Gnome, but that is not always the case with dependencies lol
wait i have no terminal in cinnamon
Basically I don't want your takeaway to be dependencies bad cause that's not really accurate lol
install it then
lemme check which one mint uses
piper
Check to see if mint has a package called mint-desktop it will be cinnamon and all the apps
@summer fractal the default terminal is the Gnome terminal for Mint I believe lmao
So in uninstalling all the Gnome packages we also uninstalled that terminal. You can probably reinstall it just don't install all dependencies lol
it is
Or there might be a .deb package for it which would be easier
get this one
@summer fractal or try installing cinnamon-desktop instead of just cinnamon
just use apt to get it
are there other terminals i can look through like generally?
tell that to hobbes not me
I don't use mint
I mean you could use Terminator or Konsole
sir i think you also have a gnome mint combo
Try installing cinnamon-desktop
Or Cool-retro-term lol
FIY, cinnamon is a fork of gnome 3 afaik
Yeah try this first thi
its working now looks like, do i do it anyways?
konsole looks bad outside plasma
Ah ok
got terminal back?
Good to know
ye
Noice
make the timeshift snapshot then retry the mouse thingy
you don't want to break cinnamon again, do you?
should i delete the previous on or just let it sit?
For now just let the old one sit as well
yep its working
having 2 or 3 snapshots it's good

install all the cinnamon apps
lemme get the command as I don't run mint
Anyways I'm tapping out it's 3am. I'm happy it's working better for you now :)
i am as well :D
try sudo apt install cinnamon-desktop-environment
should install everything
will i have duplicates now?
this is how konsole can look on plasma btw, konsole is plasma's terminal
don't think so, apt should take care of it
aight
konsole looks sick gaddayum
I think you can get same on cinnamon
nah i prefer the gnome one. its very simplistic and fits the os
I mean, dark themed aero glass on windowz
got my macros working as well
so everything works?
i meant to reply to this
you may like to get dxvk and setup games
also learn about software manager and flatpak
im not intending to run games on this. I have a beefier desktop for that
this is just my general carry around laptop so
got all missing apps like screenshot already?
yup
make a snapshot then
right
Yes just in case you are missing some stuff
did it and i have everything now. I got a software for the mouse working as well :D

Awesome! What software did you use for the mouse? Piper?
Yep! Custom macros working as well
Awesome glad Piper worked. That means my issue is probably related to my laptop or something and probably to the mouse itself.
which mouse are you on specifically?
502 hero or x?
The 502 x wireless. In the docs it says it's compatible with Ratbagd so it should work. I might just need to make sure Piper is seeing my USB ports correctly
yeah looks like it should be working, but it is much newer compared to the others
