from your Neofetch shots, u have the Cinnamon desktop (DE) u dont need mate-term or caja.

#

what I find odd though is that the Window Manager (WM) shows up as Metacity, instead of the default Mutter

#

Mint 21.2 doesnt support Metacity

#

it supposed to come with Mutter

#

check their respective permissions, that they match precisely to all the other .desktop files already there (ie - root owned, etc etc)

#

did u install something else, that would have made caja and mate-term a dependency?

#

cuz those two are Mate core programs

#

so unless u install Mate-desktop-environment idk why it would need or care to have them

#

and even if u did, ur logging into Cinnamon DE right? so it shouldnt care whether those two are there or not there

#

check from ur login screen (there's a little circle to pick what desktop session ur intending to login to) and make sure ur on what ur supposed to be on .. log out now and check

#

ok login to Cinnamon, and hopefully it loads without issue?

#

i think it's the mutter thing

#

vs Metacity

#

something doesnt belong, and it's the latter

#

Might be time to install a completely different Desktop environment

#

like KDE Plasma

#

or reinstall from scratch

u can install xfce4.. uninstall cinnamon and ANY other one.. then run those purge commands at the top of this chat given you by killertofu, if u like xfce, stay on it, otherwise after that u can reinstall cinnamon alongside.

#

multistep repair.
