step 1 is to identify the relationship of the areas
The areas of the triangles ABD and ADC are given as area of ABD/Area ADC, which is 3/5
therefore, the ratio of their areas is proprtional to the ratio of the lengths of their bases
so, ab # 1 / ab # 2 = 3/5. then we can assume ab # 1 is 3x and ab # 2 is 5x.
now, we know ab = ab # 1 + ab # 2, 3x + 5x is 8x.
Since the triangle areas are divided proportionally, we can now determine AB in terms of the ratio.
