It requires me to get 3 roots of the polynomial function but there is no roots in rational root theorem. I need 3 or any possible roots

If anyone reads this, is it possible to get 3 roots using 'Newton's raphson method'?

#

A classmate of mine used this kind of method to get the 3 roots of the function, is it right or possible?

#

The methods I tried is

  • Rational Root theorem
  • Factoring and grouping polynomials with 4 terms
  • Long division method
  • Synthetic division method
  • Complex Method
  • Cardano's Method (I don't get it)
  • Factorising Cubic equation

# minor bane What's that method?

A way to quickly find a good approximation for the root of a real-valued function (f(x) = 0).

According to its definition. A classmate of mine got 3 roots which I don't know if its right

That's a method of, y'know, approximation, not solving.

How should I know for sure? I can't see his work.

I have a picture but let me get it

I'm really not that interested in evaluating some random third party's work.

#

I'm here to help you understand this problem.

#

And the first thing to understand is that you don't just try random nonsense, that's not how math works.

vagrant summit
#

What do I need to do? Where did I go wrong?

minor bane
#

...where you went wrong was in trying a bunch of random nonsense without actually understanding it.

#

A lot of the so-called "methods" you listed are the same thing.

vagrant summit
#

Then should I retrace my steps and understand them?

minor bane
#

I don't see how "retracing your steps" would help.

vagrant summit
#

Then what should I do?

minor bane
#

...it's not about "what you should do", it's about how you should think.

vagrant summit
#

I've been trying to think for hours now and I got the feeling I'm far from the answer where it could be "obvious." Or I just have a thick skull and won't really get it.

minor bane
#

Okay, rule number one, don't think for hours. Take breaks.

vagrant summit
#

You are right. But for me, its frustrating that I don't get it

minor bane
#

Look, I'll be honest, it's 3 AM where I am. I'll explain things tomorrow, and you can use the opportunity to take a break, right?
