If anyone reads this, is it possible to get 3 roots using 'Newton's raphson method'?
A classmate of mine used this kind of method to get the 3 roots of the function, is it right or possible?
The methods I tried is
- Rational Root theorem
- Factoring and grouping polynomials with 4 terms
- Long division method
- Synthetic division method
- Complex Method
- Cardano's Method (I don't get it)
- Factorising Cubic equation
What's that method?
A way to quickly find a good approximation for the root of a real-valued function (f(x) = 0).
According to its definition. A classmate of mine got 3 roots which I don't know if its right
ix.
Are you talking about Newton's method of approximation?
Yeah, probably that. I don't know that so I could be wrong anytime
That's a method of, y'know, approximation, not solving.
So he's wrong?
How should I know for sure? I can't see his work.
I have a picture but let me get it
I'm really not that interested in evaluating some random third party's work.
I'm here to help you understand this problem.
And the first thing to understand is that you don't just try random nonsense, that's not how math works.
Then what can I do? If there's a way to solve this problem and get the roots, I want to know and learn it
What do I need to do? Where did I go wrong?
...where you went wrong was in trying a bunch of random nonsense without actually understanding it.
A lot of the so-called "methods" you listed are the same thing.
Then should I retrace my steps and understand them?
I don't see how "retracing your steps" would help.
Then what should I do?
...it's not about "what you should do", it's about how you should think.
I've been trying to think for hours now and I got the feeling I'm far from the answer where it could be "obvious." Or I just have a thick skull and won't really get it.
Okay, rule number one, don't think for hours. Take breaks.
You are right. But for me, its frustrating that I don't get it
Look, I'll be honest, it's 3 AM where I am. I'll explain things tomorrow, and you can use the opportunity to take a break, right?
I know, alright. Thanks man! Hope you get a nice rest for today wherever you are
