Work I've done so far is in the desmos. I've tried doing sin(sin(x)) and playing around with that but had no luck, maybe there is something there that I couldn't figure out.

and as a follow up question would there be a way to have it so there's three peaks then it repeats? (so instead of a gradient between 4 colors it can be 3)

Figured it out, if anyone else needed help with this play around with asin(x)+bsin(x/2)
