u r right that the slope of the best fit line would increase if we take away Hawaii, but the correlation shld b increased cuz it's a number (with no units) that shows how well the best fit line describes the data. Hawaii is too far away from this line, so the line doesn't reflect Hawaii well. If it's taken away, then this line will be closer to the remaining data.
