at each stage, you do that once for every person that already knows the rumour

and cross all those new people out

and record the total number in the table

they give you a table with the number 1 to 30 which represent the 30 people in the experiment

when someone knows the rumour, you cross them out

that allows you to know at each point in time how many people know

so say the random machine says 7, so you cross out person 7 and put 2 in the left table
therefore, person 1 told person 7
now they both know, so you on the next round would generate 2 numbers, lets say its 5 and 9
then cross out 5 and 9, and write 4 in the left table

well 1 person can't learn it twice, so yes that is indeed why it's not exponential
