I always struggle on this part but I always need to know how to do + or - correctly for these. I always seem to mess up

Got an exam tomorrow and I'm in college algebra yet I still suck.

For a while(and still to an extent) I was also confused with all these different ways like factoring and quadratic formula because of how every problem seemed to be answered differently which confuses me so much.

The right is my answer to the first step, and the highlight is where I'm wrong at. Originally before seeing this vid I was just going to subtract 4 to make it 0 but (for some reason which I still dont understand) this video says to do this as the first step instead.

you just multiplied it out and then factored it back into the same thing

#

you need to subtract 4 to get it in p(x) = 0 form

#

then factor it then

#

factoring only is helpful because of the zero product property

#

one trick is to plug the slutions in to see if they work
as you can see (6-2)(6 + 1) is not 4

#

also, for the op, whether you FOIL then subtract 4 or subtract 4 then FOIL it doesnt matter

got stumped on another problem like this too made the exact same mistake

yeah, it's a^2 + 4a - 5a - 20

#

just make sure not to switch the signs from going to the F O I L to the combined form

you simply
always add the things you got from FOIL

#

you never subtract
