I assume "gradient" means slope, those are the line equations
yes
setting x=0 gives you the y-intercepts for both lines
ok
would you mind explaining it in more simpler terms if you could?
im not used to doing like formulas
picture the xy-plane and a line on it, if the line passes through the y-axis, what value must x have at that point?
0
good
bc its going through the y axis
whenever a point lies on the y axis, its x coordinate is 0
now what does gradient 3 mean?
whenever I increase x by 1, y changes by how much?
nothing?
sorry if im getting this wrong
that is wrong
you are saying if you press accelerator the car won't be moving faster
do you believe that?
no
is it by 1 also??
by 3, because gradient 3
oh ok
gradient refers to a ratio
if you move b unit in y direction and a units in x direction, you must always preserve the gradient
so b/a = 3
hence if you increase x by 1, you must increase y by 3
oh ok i feel like i understand it now
