"A Door has the Form of a Parbola, it is 5 metres tall and 3.2m wide on the bottom. Car A is 2m wide and 2.1m tal, Car B is 2.4m wide and 2.2m tall.

  1. Check mathematically if both Cars can fit through the door.
  2. If one of them is too tall, indicate how much it is taller."

My question is what did my maths teacher do there, where did she get f(x) = ax^2+b from, and why did she do that?

she got ax²+b as the parabola has no horizontal shift, only vertical shift

#

you know b because it's 5m tall

#

and you know the X intercepts so you can form the quadratic

cobalt comet
#

and the 0= means that it only has 1 possible answer right?

restive shard
#

no, it has 2 due to the properties of quadratics

#

they're symmetric about their vertex

cobalt comet
#

ohhh

#

the 0 she took from the y coordinate

#

so she just put in the numbers in place

#

oh and the 1.6 is because it is symmetric and 3.2/2 is 1.6

#

so the 0 points are at -1.6 and 1.6

#

thanks

restive shard
#

yeah

#

np

cobalt comet
#

wait

#

i actually got another question

#

why do I even need a

#

what's it for?

#

i dont get it

#

im so braindead

restive shard
#

the question says the door is the shape of a parabola

cobalt comet
#

so that means..?

restive shard
#

a parabola is the curve that's formed by a quadratic function

cobalt comet
#

so a is here to see how "narrow" the parabola is from the car?

cobalt comet
#

alright thank you very much
