Well, at a certain point, it's important to try new things, and I think it's much better to allow all players to participate in such events instead of excluding a big portion, which is why you see a lot more events where everyone can actually take part.
Also, this was a point of criticism from the community at the time, as many were unable to participate in such events. Therefore, the feedback was taken into consideration, and changes were made to improve the events.
