Items not available for pick up when upgrading at blacksmith

A friend of mine and myself were upgrading tools at the same time. It said my watering can was ready for pick up, but it wasn't there. Her item , that was also ready , wasn't there either. So now I have no watering can and don't know how to get one since you need the first one to upgrade
