I only noticed in multiplayer because it made me start a new game but I can check my single player tonight and let you know:)

It appears to just be the multiplayer. My normal save with my silver axe does the 5 hits to take tree down and 3 for the stump which google says is accurate.

Is there any way to do co op with a save or do I have to start a new?
