Does the host have to be present in order for anyone else to play in the multiplayer save? And I’m a tad confused about the pausing situation and how it works

The host must be present at all times for other people to play.
People can pause individually (aka view their options menu and the like) but time will still continue; or, reportedly, the host themselves can pause universally.
