Do you need a steam version to play multiplayer?

Can you do Xbox on Xbox cross play?? I only see that steam-Xbox and steam-PlayStation, but Xbox-PlayStation you can’t do. But does that mean Xbox-xbox doesn’t work either even though it’s not specify??

xbox - xbox doesn't count as crossplay. It's the same platform. The only restriction is PS5

I didn’t mean crossplay, but I wasn’t fully sure if you had to have a steam version for it to work.
