Upon Adopting cat, cannot pet the cat, only talk to them. No friendship gain. Reloading or Restarting the game does nothing.
I tried to adopt > then bought indoor bed > returned to adopt late at night > watched the entire pet delivery dialog the following morning > Can only talk to pet.

reddit says there is supposed to be a "pet" feature not just "talk" as the player sometimes doesn't do the petting animation which is why I was confused. After thinking about some of the other issues I was having It was probably fixed when I restarted my computer. Its back to normal here. I'll keep playing until things start to destabilize again.

also, pet UI says they can be given gifts, despite the fact that they cant receive anything. Is that a bug or is giving them toys and treats a future feature?

thats weird when searching for it the Brave AI doesnt have reddit in its list of citations this time
this is what the search generated, which is why I reported it as a bug as I my character wasn't doing the petting animation, which convinced me I wasn't gaining any affection.

yesterday there was a reddit tag about not being able to "pet" your pets in the AI search, so i assumed it was a know issue. But today a similar search only shows the community post with a bugged out pet, not the player. Again. I'm going to chalk this up as my computer needing a full restart I haven't been able to recreate this behavior all day.

I’ve forwarded this to the team, and we can confirm that for now, the only intended interaction with pets is "Talk". 🙌
In this case, "Petting" actually refers to the "Talk" interaction, since it includes the petting animation and a short dialogue pop-up. So, although it says “Talk,” it still counts as petting — and it’s how you build friendship with your pet over time.
As for the Reddit mentions about not being able to pet — that might be referring to an older issue where the interaction prompt didn’t appear at all. Some players still refer to the “Talk” action as “petting”.
