I went to the blacksmith's to process a lot of chests containing artifacts. I had 30 coffers and 54 shimmering chests, and 27 free places in my inventory. At blacksmith's, I pressed TAB to process all chests at once. First, 30 coffers were opened, and there was some free space left in my inventory. I proceeded and wanted to open the 54 shimmering chests. I scanned the list that detailed the artifacts I got, because I was looking for 1 specific artifact that I needed to complete the collection. I saw that I finally got the artifact and exited the blacksmith's. But when I went to the museum to donate I noticed that the artifact was missing in my inventory - and the whole stack of shimmering coffers disappeared, even though most of the items I should have gotten were missing. It looks like even if there is no space left in your inventory, the coffers are opened and the items just disappear. To immediately solve my issue, I reloaded the save.
I only noticed it now, but it probably happened before, because I had whole stacks of coffers disappear even when there was no space left in my inventory to process them.

It happens when you have just enough free space to process coffers/fossils etc. but not enough to store them in the inventory. So best is process them in batches and empty in the chest
