I just started playing and finally got a coop and one chicken. I see there is a bench for feeding my chicken hay. If I buy a silo now, will it auto feed my chicken or do I need to upgrade my coop 1-2 times? I am seeing a lot of similarities in game rules to SDV which I've played for years so I wondered if I should wait on the silo.

You can store hay in a silo but you need to craft the auto feeder for anything else

Ah ok. So upgrading the coop will not eventually give me an auto feeder. I'll need to craft it when I get the recipe.

correct. Upgrading the coop allows you to get new kinds of animals. Some cannot go in the regular coop or barn. You also need to upgrade before you can put the heater or auto machines in there, but you need to buy or research those, you don't just get them for upgrading
also keep in mind, you do not get XP for using any of the auto machines, so I usually wait until I'm already ranching 10 to get them
