While watching a scene where Betty and some others are paying their respects to her late husband, I noticed something. The actions performed (Bowing while holding incense, burning what I assume is paper money, and leaving food) are EXACTLY the same as what I, a Chinese American, do with my family when we visit my grandparents’ graves. According to my research, this is a Chinese tradition and since Stairway Games is Indonesian, I have some questions for the devs:

  1. Is this an east/southeast Asian thing? I used to think the certain practices were Chinese only so I’m prepared to be wrong.

1a. If not, does that mean Betty is Chinese?How/when did you learn of this tradition?

  1. Why did you decide to animate this? You could have just had Betty tell a story about her husband and then fade to black as the group looked at his grave. Instead you devoted resources to the aforementioned actions (in particular creating an asset for the perforated trash can which I can’t think of another use for)

None of this is to say I didn’t like the scene, far from it, I was just surprised.

Hello a_dub888! Thank you for your excitement, let me answers your questions.

  1. In Indonesia we also have part of Chinese culture as there are a lots of Chinese descendant in Indonesia. So that's why we also celebrate or implement things like Lunar new year, Qing Ming, etc

1b. Well Betty is a fictional character, but we want to share the culture in Indonesia as we diverse in etnicity and race, the Chinese Indonesian are part of it. Some of the devs are Chinese Indonesian (Heck even I am a part of them, LOL)

  1. Well back to the 1b. answers we want to display the diversity and richness in culture, we also want to show that Betty and her kids still embracing their tradition
