I suppose I picked up the fossil and got the scene showing its item description for the first time while I was in the middle of a swing, and I got completely stuck in the 'charging up' animation unable to press any buttons. I couldn't even open the pause menu until I hit fn+prtsc to take the screenshot so I could press the Stuck button.

No, sorry, I didn't think to get a video of it 😔 But I'm 99% sure it happened from a slight delay with picking up items causing me to get the fossil item while I was already in the middle of swinging to clear more rubbish

I remember having a similar issue on the farm, also with a scythe. Picked something up (I might've not had an item of this rarity before because I had a popup), clicked to swing again while the popup was still opening - got stuck. That was a while ago, but I remember it so I wanted to point out it's not just an underwater thing.
