#Steam Overlay process not launching with Coral Island

hello!

**Reproduction Steps **
I have a problem with Steam's Overlay. As in, it doesn't work with Coral Island: the process doesn't even launch.

I checked with other games, and the GameOverlayUI.exe starts perfectly with them, as soon as I launch the game. Nothing shows up in the task manager/details process for Coral Island.

I know it used to work since I used to use it and the troubleshooting help on this Discord mentions checking out the overlay several times. But the process acts (or rather, doesn't do anything), like this game isn't compatible with Steam's overlay.

I :

  • checked CI's recent patch notes just in case.
  • checked that Steam's overlay is on in the settings,
  • checked that Coral Island overlay is on in properties,
  • changed the hotkey for the overlay,
  • deleted in-game overlay data for CI,
  • verified integrity of CI files,
  • reinstalled Steam,
  • switched ProjectCoral-Win64-Shipping.exe compatibility to Win8,
  • switched ProjectCoral-Win64-Shipping.exe compatibility to Win8 and ran as admin,
  • I opened the game from the .exe file in the folder than through Steam.

Repro Rate
Any time I launch the game.

**Game Platform **
Steam and I'm on Win 11 Home, my windows is up to date

**Game Version **
v. 1.1-1225 installed Aug 16 2024

Input Mode
Keyboard and mouse

Thank you!

Hello there! Thank you for your report. Could you please share the screenshot of your In Game Steam settings?
You can do that by opening the Steam app, clicking Steam > Settings > In Game.

Also, could you send the screenshot of the General Setting for Coral Island? You can do that by going to Library > right-click on Coral Island > Properties > General. Thank you!

# dense tinsel Thank you for sending the screenshots to us. May I ask if you've opened the Cora...

*May I ask if you've opened the Coral Island and clicked the Shift+Tab and the Steam Overlay didn't appear? *
Shift-tabbing or whichever keybind is in use does nothing because the process does not even launch with the game. When I use any other game, if you look at the task manager, you see the-game process AND the process for GameOverlayUI.exe starting. And then the shift-tab overlay works. When I start Coral I, I see in the task manager ProjectCoral-Win64-Shipping.exe but the process for GameOverlayUI doesn't even blip, it's like Coral Island doesn't ask Steam to launch the Overlay or however that works.

could you please share a video of when you try to open the Steam Overlay while opening Coral Island?
There is nothing to show. You hit the shortcut and nothing happens, CI doesn't even blip, which makes sense since the process/"software" for the Overlay does not launch at the same time as Coral Island starts.

Hello, I am also having this issue it seems. I was just playing two games (FFXIV and Stardew Valley) which both allowed Shift+Tab overlay. Now I can't access it on Coral even with a restart and double checking settings. To clarify with pictures. I just sent a bug report on another thing and you can see where I couldn't make anything pop up. It will not work in game, in menus, or the like.

Hi, @dense tinsel, I forgot to attach it earlier but my settings do have it as checked on.

Hey Rachma! I have noticed that when I specifically boot up steam, my HUD seems to be really wonky lol. I am censoring this image cause my friend's name is mildly inappropriate LMFAO.

Thank you for providing the details again, Grim!

Hmm, if you try turning off the “Scale Steam Overlay text...” option in the Steam In-Game settings, does the pop-up notification then appear at the correct size? And are you able to access the Steam Overlay normally?

Let us know whenever you have a chance to check—thank you!

I didn't do anything to steam or the like, but when I booted up Coral Island for the first time today it reverted to normal. I have had this happen a few times while playing Coral Island on Steam (I have about 80 hours there, and 70+ on xbox game pass)
Not sure what happened!! But happy it's fixed for now

Rachma I am SO sorry but this issue is actually happening every other time I open Coral Island. I am now doing what you suggested earlier and will keep you updated. It's at least not happening every time. I partially wonder if it's surrounding drivers updates? but it does not make the gameplay unplayable for me!

#

oop, it was actually already checked. right now it's fine but yesterday I opened the game 4 separate times and it did it once.

So, I'm back at playing Coral Island.
Knowing the Steam overlay troubles I had the last time, I uninstalled the game/restarted my PC/reinstalled everything before playing.

#

Immediately the first time I loaded the game, the FPS turned out HUGE at the top of my screen. I checked, and the shift+tab steam overlay still didn't work, even though it worked in other games.
google+reddit told me that the huge FPS could be resolved by going in CI's setting (I'm borderless), switching to fullscreen/applying it, and then going back to borderless.
It did work and re-established my steam overlay too.

#

BUT, I have to do that every time I load the game.
I tried leaving it in full screen and loading the game like that, but I have the same huge fps/no steam overlay problem, until I change the display setting back and forth once.
I also tried re-validating the files (which were re-installed just last saturday, as I said)

Huh, my overlay has also been huge on launch lately. It's also very inconsistent when it pops up. I'll have to look into my settings tonight. I never change my steam settings though so I do think it's a CI issue.
