#Massive Memory Leaks

Description Game starts to lag for a moment then catches up. Today, these have gotten much worse and the game has frozen completely. I have had to end the game through the task manager and lose my progress. During my investigation, I discovered my memory usage was at 99% and it was almost all being used by Coral Island. I have 32 GB of RAM so this should not be an issue. I am reporting this here rather than the crash thread as I do not have a crash report to attach.
Reproduction Steps: Many times through the day the small memory leaks occur when dashing or opening chests, opening a menu, or doing any kind of task such as clearing crops or trash with a scythe or destroying rocks with TNT. The two freezes today occurred in similar circumstances. The first I was rearranging my farm and I broke a chest to move it and then as I was moving to the next chest I opened it and the game froze with the memory leak. The second time I dashed to a chest and opened it and the game froze with a memory leak. Both times the chest GUI did not open. I could still hear the BGM but no controls or video worked, image was stuck. I allowed the game to run for several minutes to see if it would respond but it did not.
Repro Rate: Minor memory leaks are constant. Two major memory leaks have been twice in the last two hours.
Game Platform: Steam
**Game Version: ** 1.1-1225
**Input Mode: ** Keyboard and mouse
Attachment: I have attached my save file and also a screen shot of my task manager's memory read showing the massive use by Coral Island.

The same thing keeps happening to me as well for the past two weeks 😭 Hoping there will be a fix soon.

So I read a lot of people are having stutter, I don't know if this is the right place for this, but when running the game from a steam shortcut you have 2 exe files running in the details tab in Task manager. I noticed this because my Graphic setting had two entries for Coral Island. A Regular one and a Win64 one. I made a shortcut for the Win64 one and the stutter is pretty much gone while in game. Task manager also only shows one process now. Maybe something can be done about steam using two processes when using it's shortcut? Also sorry if this is dumb, I just really didn't want to deal with stutter and maybe this is already known (edited)

yeah it happens to me in the past week, the more you play in a day without closing the game, it just get worse at some point you must close it or it may crash too

Screen shot of where it just occurred for me again. I closed the chest and realized I forgot to put something in and opened it again, game froze. Was literally on my way to save and end the day after a very productive day and then quit playing for the night... This is the best way to report issues but is there a way to know if the reports are seen by a dev?

Hello everyone! I'm sorry for the late reply and for the freeze issue you've encountered. 🙇‍♀️ Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Do you happen to have a video of your in-game activities before the memory leaks and the game freezes? Can you let us know how long you've played (in real-time) before it happened?

uneven coral
#

Hi Rachma, and no problem for the late reply. I would not have reported had I not seen multiple other reports of this issue online from other users throughout other patches.

I do not have a video as I do not stream. Sometimes I play for an extended period of time, however I often get up and do chores around the house, leaving the game paused, then come back later to play more. When it crashed again on the evening of the 20th I had only had the game running for about 2 hours in real life. I was surprised that it froze that quickly. I haven't opened the game again since the 20th because I was very discouraged by another freeze and loss of progress.

I have again been playing for about two hours. I was walking through my chests putting things away from my harvest for the day. Pausing between each chest to try to prevent this from occurring. This happens every time I play now. Also pictured: an auto chest not functioning properly. I use them sparingly because I know they won't work.

Hi Lissy! Thank you for keeping us updated. May I ask if you have played for 2 hours in real-time or in-game time? If the issue reappears, could you send us a video of your in-game activities before or when the issue happened?

You could record it using the phone and letting us know the Task Manager preview as well. It will be very helpful so our team can better understand the problem.

As for the Auto Chest that won't work sometimes, we've received a similar report here https://discord.com/channels/623097219628662784/1270085763064664084
To help us track this in one thread, you could add the info you've experienced there. Thank you!

Hi Rachma! The issue occurs typically after a couple hours of playing in real time. I have started shutting down the game at the end of every in-game day to try to minimize the chance of this occurring. I am unable to video the issue occurring before it happens, as I don't know when it will occur. The game will be running fine then suddenly stop. Once it freezes next time, I am happy to video it. I can try to force it to occur this weekend when I have time to play more. Typically opening chests a lot is does it. Thank you for keeping an eye on this!

Just ended my day and decided to force a freeze. The opening and closing of a chest is dramatic - obviously not normal behavior - but I do believe the switching of screens is what triggers the freeze.

#

The more you change screens - opening inventory, changing between areas, rooms, chests, etc, the more often you get "hitches" in the game running. Then when you open a chest it just freezes.

#

I had only been playing the game for an hour when I forced the freeze for the video for you. Hopefully this helps. @upbeat socket

@upbeat socket Certainly! This is a self-build PC so I can upgrade as necessary. The CPU is next on the list of upgrades when money allows, however she is still handling running of games like a champ. Please let me know if I missed anything in the specs you need!
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Eight-Core Processor 3.00 GHz
GPU NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti
Installed RAM 32.0 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Memory I do have the game installed on a HDD rather than my SSD. I install my MMO games on my SSD. My HDD is 1 TB and my SSD is 2 TB. I currently have 619 GB free on my HDD and 1.08 TB free on my SSD.
I do have a tab or two open in Chrome typically and often I will open an excel doc as I will utilize it to track items I need to catch or gather still for quests. I do not believe this should cause an issue with the game as it does not cause an issue with other games. I do not notice a difference when I have these programs open versus when I do not have them open. Closing them does not cause the memory usage to go down once the leak occurs.

I've been one of the many struggling with this issue for a while too, usually it freezes with chests for me, yesterday it froze on opening an autochest, and then later when I entered my house and clicked P so I could store some new furniture.

I normally run the game with a browser open, both for wiki, and often watching twitch in another monitor, though I have also tried with no other programs running whatsoever, and it doesn't prevent the issue. Whenever the game freezes, it crashes the stream I'm watching as well.

I have found it slightly more common if I play more than one day in game, but I've also had to replay the same day half a dozen times before, because of that bug, so clearly the game doesn't need to be open very long in order to encounter the bug. No video of gameplay, but usually I do try and sort things into their correct chests before I turn in for the night, so normally there's a bunch of chest opening then.

Win11 x64, Ryzen 7 5800, 32G RAM, NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3060, installed on my 4TB SSD

I'm including screenshots from my last run last night, 1 of the screen I frozen on, and two task manager shots from when I first opened the game and it was running normally, and another from immediately after the game froze.

@golden lagoon Thank you so much for adding your experience to the report! I think the more people who report the issue the more likely we are to get assistance with it and the more likely the devs are going to be able to find the memory leak. 🙂 I also think this seems to be occurring more as the game progresses. I am almost into year 3 now and it is happening so much more often. I am not sure where you are on your game. I wonder if it has to do with the number of resources you have gathered throughout your time in the game that is also adding to the probability of the leak.

Oh, it just happened to me again this time on the shipping bin. ;-; Still not a single error message to date either.

# golden lagoon I'm trying to remember if I'm year 5 or 6 now, but certainly a long ways in

I just ended my second day in game one irl hour into playing and I decided to shut down the game so I didn't risk it freezing on me. At least we know @Rachma is looking into it now 🙂 SUCKS that it happened in your shipping bin! I was able to force it to happen by just repeatedly opening a chest and videoed it with my phone balanced under my chin if they request one from you, too.

Thank you @uneven coral and @golden lagoon! Can you also share with us the screenshots or video of your in-game Display Settings?

I have been seeing a similar issue with my game, and thus have started a file that I will be recording the entirety of play with my task manager to find just where/when it starts to tank

Oh yeah. I try to play Coral Island and my PC is like "Good luck with that. Duck_Saluting_Emoji ". So I keep periodically checking and cleaning out my RAM after I knock out all but the essentials. It also likes to overheat my pc so I gotta put the fans on full blast--seriously, it sounds like a plane about to take off--and be on the lowest setting possible. Mind you this is a GAMING pc. It's supposed to handle this stuff. I chose it specifically for Subnautica Below Zero and that's as graphic intensive as it could be at the time. I'm gonna take my pc in and get the thermal paste checked since it's been about a year now. But still.

Hello,

I wanted to add a problem that ocur like your. For over a month now, I’ve noticed that when I play the game on the Steam platform, my PC’s fans start going crazy. I realized that it’s almost fully using my GPU (graphics card) and its temperature reaches over 87°c, which doesn’t happen with my other games like FF14, Genshin, Overwatch, Baldur’s Gate, etc.
The noise it makes (the fans) really worries me, as it feels like my PC is about to explode.

i will try to take screen but i am to afraid to damage my pc
it happens like 5 minutes after i start playing

I built this PC to be a gaming PC and also have no issues with FFXIV and other games such as Disney Dreamlight Valley which is somewhat comparable in my opinion (though I could be entirely wrong) however I fully recognize they have a much larger team and a lot more money behind those games. I do wish we got more communication surrounding this issue, especially since a simple google search shows this issue has been going on for years. My gaming habits range from cozy to hardcore, so the fact that this game is the one that is doing my PC in is frustrating. lol

I think @tidal hazel mentioned it, but it seems like the issue is with 2 tasks ongoing at the same time. I think easiest way would be to go to "Graphics Settings" on the PC settings and look for coral island icons. And there should be 2 apps if they are correct with different directories.

@upbeat socket just for additional info

uneven coral

Yes, I had put that info up top in my post, but I was unable to locate how to correct the issue because I am a great big dumb-dumb butt who really shouldn't be messing with computers as much as I do........ 🤐 I would be THRILLED to do this if it fixes it........... I just need an ELI5 how-to because I am still learning how to do things. (Yup, that was embarrassing to type out. I'm gonna go and sit in a corner for a while now.)

You need to go to where you have the game installed.
From the main Coral Island Location go to ProjectCoral to Binaries to Win64 and it's the ProjectCoral-Win64-shipping exe file. If you launch it through the other EXE at all, it launches both of these.

uneven coral
#

Thank you for explaining and thank you for also tagging me in the other post! I have found the correct .exe and it does not appear to have made a difference as my task manager is not showing a different number of items running. I will keep launching from this location rather than Steam, though, because I will take ANY chance for improvement over none. 🙂 I appreciate you all so much!!!

Hello @uneven coral! I'm sorry for the freeze issue that happened again. Thank you for sharing the screenshot with us, our team is currently checking this issue.

Can share the screenshot if you drop down the Coral Island (2) in the Task Manager?
Also, can you also share the screenshot from the Tab performance of your CPU, GPU, and Memory when you play Coral Island and the freeze issue occurs? Thank you!

@upbeat socket Forced a freeze by the usual manner - repeatedly opening and closing a chest. I hope these screen shots cover everything. The background of the screen is the game frozen. Thanks again!

can confirm, game tends to lag after 2-3 days. while fps stay the same, you can microsecond stutter.
