Spouse Interaction with Child

Is your spouse suppose to interact with your children?
I understand that I cannot yet, but I've read a couple things that seem to imply that your spouse will interact and hold your children. However, I married Lily and we have two kids and she has thus far ignored them as far as I can tell. Just curious if this is expected or if something is wrong?
