It shows him, jim, and sam super off the map in this weird gray area, not sure if I'm missing something or if they're just gone

I found him eventually by hanging out at the lighthouse until he came home, and when I talked to him in game it reset as if it never happened

Just an FYI, if you're searching Wataru for his birthday and the NPC finder brings you to the void, he's actually at the Beach Shack. I don't know why the game does it, but for some reason, Wataru isn't registered in the Beach Shack when he's in the building.
Though personally, I haven't seen it done to Sam and Jim (perhaps I could wait for another Wednesday and see it myself).

As you can see, the game only register me, Wakuu and Sunny despite Wataru is there (and perhaps Jim, I don't remember if he's there or not).

Also having the exact same issue, although Wataru showed as being in the Beach Shack at first, and it was only in this screen recording that he "teleported" off the map. Jim showed up as off the map with Yuri all in game yesterday too

Adding my save, I had this issue with Wataru as well on Year 1. Tried to find him on his birthday, the game just said NPC not found. Eventually found him in the beach shack playing chess with Sam, but I couldn't interact with him. Kept saying he was busy.

Firstly; it is a known bug. For some reason, some NPCs that frequent the Beach Shack would not show up on the map though rest assured, they are there. For future notes; if they do not show on the map, Beach Shack might be the culprit! :3 (this is as 13th August 2024, prior to the recent update. Since there's a new entry to this, it might still a bug in the latest update but I can't confirm it myself.)
For the second one; when NPCs are interacting with certain objects, they are shown as busy. This is not a bug! Another example would be when there is a volley ball match at the beach–NPCs involved are not interactable.
