I'm glad they've offered a key change again, I kind of regretted not getting it last time. I would prefer it on the Switch, but I'm okay with getting a Steam key instead. I imagine a fair amount of people are in my boat too, where they would prefer Switch but are willing to go with Steam.

And especially with this info that they only have full control over the Steam version. It's clearly been the version they can properly update and hotfix the most.

I highly doubt they would add mac support any time soon considering they have to deal with the hot mess of scrambling to push an update to consoles and continue developing for the switch (if that's even still a thing). They should just refund switch backers who don't want the steam key.

It amazes me that even after they say they’re under NDA people still complain about lack of transparency (not calling anyone specific out just my view point looking through comments online) Also Kickstarter literally has a disclaimer you pay and might not get any reward, so to ask for refunds is pointless, imo. You accepted the risk when you backed it. Not seeing the disclaimer is a fault on you not the dev team.

I think its too early for that argument though since thats not what they're saying. Perhaps if its confirmed that the Switch is cancelled will something happen but at this point its just an extra delay.

ALL console editions are affected by this annoncement. None of them are going to be updated past what they currently are at since Humble was the one in charge of ports. So technically they could be cancelled as well.

The difference is that at least there is something playable on those consoles and Switch has nothing. So targeting the key swap to Switch users makes sense if they decide they dont want to wait for an ultra delayed release.

Its exactly because theres something playable on all other consoles that it feels as a FU to Switch backers.

But is it shared profits though? its a complete loss for Stairway at this point - the money they made from Switch backers during the kickstarter (and Switch version was only offered during that backing) that money has long been used up if you look at how much game developement costs.

Plus they cannot like send out a survey saying "if we could give u a refund would you want one" and take that to lawyers like - they have to show actual damages not potential ones - plus they would never have an accurate count as plenty of people never paid attention the first time around they offered a key swap. Also - do you know how many people would misread that survey and complain that "stairway said id get a refund!"

Their best option at this point is say hey - Since we're in limbo right now we can swap your key to a version we control completely (Steam) and you can do what you want with that key - OR - just wait it out even though publishing will take longer at this point and you'll still get your Switch edition

I did send them an email this morning about getting a PC steam key but haven’t heard anything back yet, I do hope it doesn’t take too long at least for the people that are okay on switching systems. Reminder the devs are in Indonesia so they are likely not going to respond for a bit as it is 12am/1am/2am depending on where they’re at. There also might be different laws in play so they might not be able to do anything at the moment other than offer a steam key. Sadly all that can be done is be patient since it’s hardly in their hands

Saying that the publishers are now a problem doesn't make up for the lack of communication or transparency that has been experienced by switch backers. I think people would be more sympathetic if there was evidence of a continuation of publisher problems over the years this has been funded. Not just monthly emails about what more things are being added on top of bugs, glitches and non-porting.

so an NDA stands for "Non Disclosure Agreement". It's a legal document that is signed at the beginning of a partnership. It means that the signing party cannot disclose sensitive information.

Besides, switch backers aren’t the only ones affected. Other consoles now have currently no chance of an update anymore, meaning they’re stuck with whatever bugs they have until their lawyer or Humble gives them access to the backend. They only have control of the Steam one. They’re doing what they can in light of the situation.

I have signed NDAs before, and obvs nobody here would know that, but as such, I do know I can say "I have signed an NDA" and that communication in itself provides something of an answer.
So way back when, when switch backers started asking about the port, there should have been communication that said "hey we've signed an NDA"

Its a sad situation right know. No one who has backed the game would want that to happen. To be frustrated is okay but sometimes people express their feelings not in a good manner. If it comes to the worst only PC players will get the updates 1.2 and 1.3 and Xbox and PS5 gets nothing along with the switch version.

They won't stand for that unless the legal system sides with humble and Stairway exhausts all options. They'll do what they can to get the rights since humble is failing them (my opinion)

Coral Island has a large enough staff and is popular enough that the Switch version is likely to happen - the question is only when.

Stairway Games isn't the only dev team that's been thrown under the proverbial bus with the gutting of Humble Games (the parent company Ziff Davis is responsible for that). Hopefully, the affected dev teams can organize and encourage a fair legal settlement quickly. At the moment Stairway Games has to assess their legal options and options for a new publisher or trying to self-publish (which will add different cost and time constraints).

Compounded with this is Nintendo's silence on "When will the new Switch be released?" I'm happy that Switch backers have been offered an option for a key on a different platform - it's not the most desired option but it's the one which Stairway can reasonably offer right now. We don't even know if Stairway is getting money from the sales of the game they created; often the publisher gets the money and, after taking their cut for things like localization and marketing, sends the rest to the dev team.

“Yes, we can definitely help you out with that. Just a heads up, once you switch your key to Steam, you won't be able to change it again. It might take us up to 14 business days to process this change.

If you want to go ahead, please confirm your email address and backer number. Screenshots of your Kickstarter receipt work too.”

For anyone else wondering how to get your receipt and/or backer number like I was:

Hover over your profile pic on Kickstarter. Your backed projects should be in that dropdown. Select Coral Island.

You should have a blue banner at the top of the page saying you backed the project. There's a small white "View pledge" link. Select that. Take a screenshot and send it to the devs! Your backer number is on this page too. I would include that to ensure they have the most amount of info possible.

This is not always the case and completely depends on the contract. When we were alpha testing Palia, we were not even allowed to say the game existed. We could not mention the NDA because then we'd have to mention what it was for.

Working with these devs for a little over 3 years and knowing their communication style, if they COULD have told us, they would have.

Sadly the fact that every port outside of the Steam version was controlled by Humble really set them back, especially with an NDA probably preventing them from saying anything.

If you really can’t play on PC or have a Steam deck I would just hold onto your keys.

There's nowhere you can actively request the key change in discord; for the sake of security, it's best to do it through email.

As for any DLCs, no, you cannot purchase them

I, as well as a few others, have received an initial reply asking us to confirm we understand if we select a Steam code now we will not receive a Switch code in the future (though tbh I feel like at this point they could give us both to be nice lol) and asking us to confirm our backer number and email. And said it can take up to 14 days to receive our Steam code.

That’s a really interesting reply and to me shows they are confident they will be able to provide a Switch version at some point. So they want people to be extra sure they want to swap it out.

The thing is they absolutely could’ve even with an NDA said things like “it’s still in the works, and we’ve had hiccups” over the past 2 years. That’s it. I don’t understand why they’d have an NDA that was “you can’t acknowledge anything to do with the switch” since day 1. Especially when others groups in the same situation have been able to give barebones basic updates. It just seems suspicious. It you don’t have to jump down my throat for voicing concerns about 2 years of silence from a group that has a significant amount of money from folks.

The problem is that right now they do not have access to any console keys. They only directly publish the Steam PC version and so that’s what they can offer. Any console ports was all through Humble so they don’t have access.

Pretty much it’s just too early to ask for any other type of key swap until we hear updates from them on what will happen going forward - which if they have to deal with legal issues due to their contract could take a while

Just asked to change my key for a Steam one. Playing on pc / phone / tablet is nice too I guess. If I didn't get my new pc recently I would be super frustrated (a lot of Switch players don't have PC or powerful enough ones). But hey, maybe Switch key will be released one day !

Update; I sent my key change request in on 7/25, they first responded 7/28 and this morning I received notice my confirmation of request to change the key and three minutes later got the BackerKit email that has a link to retrieve my key for Steam.

If you switch your key, you'll get the game on Steam. Whatever version of Coral Island ends up on Switch will also be on Steam.

And, well. Not being funny but why would you need to be compensated in-game? Would you expect someone who buys the game five years from now to be compensated because they didn't have it? That's a good question about Kickstarter add-on reward keys. You'd have to contact an official Coral Island team member for those answers (DM Novita or Eriska, etc). The add-ons key change from Switch to PC might be very simple for them or they may have to manually do it and would probably handled after the main game keys are settled.

If you've gotten an email from them and have sent one back, then you're kinda still in the queue - not as long a wait, but they don't work weekends, so that can cause a bit of a longer wait time.

For those of you who were waiting (or still are) for the switch version, did any of you also add on the mythical dragon as a pet add on? Did you ever get a code for that? I signed up for early access on Steam, wanted a switch version, and added the dragon, but I as I started playing the game on my Steam deck instead of waiting for the switch game, I realized I never got the code for the dragon….i emailed Stairway so I’m waiting for a reply from them, but wanted to see if anyone else had experienced something similar?

If you ordered the Switch version then we technically don't have codes yet because there is no game for Switch yet. For example, i ordered one of each so i have a Steam pet code but also a "placeholder" switch version pet listing. If you decided to swap out your Switch version for the Steam version then both your Steam game code and Steam mythical pet code should be located in your backerkit account.

oohh i see, if i understand correctly then you have the switch version plus pet through kickstarter but bought Steam game separate. Yeah thats a pickle - idk if you contacted them already or not but just be prepared if you request and they do allow you to swap the pet code to a Steam version that you may no longer have a Switch one when/if it comes out since technically you only bought one pet code and you've just "used" it up.

Granted if Steam is gonna be your main game anyway then (since we have no idea when Switch will happen) i just say go for it xD
