If I plant a sapling and place a decoration (A fence, specifically) in the 5x5 square that it needs empty, will the sapling still grow? It won't let me place the sapling while the fence is there, but I can place the fence afterward. Placing the fence when the fruit tree is fully grown doesn't seem to stop it from dropping fruit.

Ooo, I'm also curious if like, paths and such can affect growth of saplings? I don't remember if I've heard an answer to that but it seemed adjacent to your question so I thought I'd throw that out in the same thread
I can confirm that paths won't get in the way. Saplings can still be placed when there are paths in their 5x5 area and they'll still grow.
Ah! Great to know
But yeah, good to know if the fence placement afterwards would stop saplings from growing. I know having them around the "wild" trees (pine/maple/oak) don't seem to stop them... but those aren't the fruit saplings and don't have as much restrictions on planting that I know of
Saplings don't need a 5x5 empty space, they need a 3x3 empty space. The only times you need to think about a 5x5 is if you're planting them next to the farm borders or inside the greenhouse
Additionally - to answer your question - while a fruit tree is growing, you shouldn't put anything in their area, but once fully grown then they'll do just fine with fences, paths, etc., in their space.
That's odd, it at least needs a 5x5 to place
Hm.
Well, it shouldn't. Unless the fences are counting for the typical 'boundary' people encounter, fruit trees should only need the 3x3 space.
Same thing happens if other items like scarecrows, sprinklers, artisan machines, etc are within the 5x5
