The same thing happens when I try to plant in an untilled area, am I doing something wrong?

Try it again without standing inside the marked tiles. That might be the problem. Hope that fixes it.

I noticed my trees didn't like having a sprinkler placed next to the 8 empty squares (like the one in your screenshot). After I removed the sprinkler, I could place the tree.

Oh yeah, that might be the issue (it's the same in Stardew)
