My playthrough focused on gathering data for this. I upgraded only the fruit seedling crops through the lab. I did NOT select the "quality crop" option from mastery skills. My farming level is 10.
My harvests showed that upgrades improved the quality overall. However, while the gold upgrade started producing gold-quality fruit, the osmium upgrade did not produce any osmium-quality fruit despite a larger sample size.

I also saved a copy of the save-game before I upgraded to the osmium level, in case the team wants to see if there's some other difference between the gold upgrade and osmium upgrade in the save files.
