Late in the game, 1 scarecrow will cover a 19x19 area. But until you unlock it, you'll be using a lot of it.

about 1280 crops, 16 splinkers and 4 scarecrows for them all

Early game, easiest larger area scarecrow to use is the one you can purchase from Ben's caravan.
