Call Animals in/Close doors

Hi all, I don't know if this is a bug or what.

I typically let my animals out in the morning while I'm watering crops. Then I go do something (mine, clean ocean, etc.) and come back late at night.

When I come back, my animals are usually in, and I try to use the bell to close the door, but it doesn't work. The bell will not ring, door will not close. It will be closed the next morning when I wake up.

Is this a bug? Should I be able to close the doors at like 11pm at night? Or do I just let it go?

Thanks. (I am used to Stardew Valley where I totally CAN do this, that may be part of my confusion. )

Oh. So it isn't something where like... Wild animals will attack my animals if I don't close the doors, or my animals will get sad if I don't close them in or anything?
