This happened twice to me, once yesterday (fall 19 2nd year) and once today (winter 2 2nd year). During the fall one I had spent the day in the ocean, during the winter one I was out trying to catch rove beetles. I think on both days I went to bed right at midnight.

I started out the day farming, then I foraged for a while and from about 3pm I think I started hunting bugs. I guess I can say I found a bug, just not the type I was looking for
