invisible items in auto chest

Yesterday I was trying to move a conveyor belt around, so I removed everything inside the chest (it was full) and the machines attached to it, but I would get an error message whenever I tried to move the chest saying I had to remove all items to dislodge it. I tried a bunch of things before I ultimately clicked on 'sort', which then made 3 items appear in the chest that weren't visible before. After this, I could pick the auto chest up and move it where I wanted.
