the game is crashing regularly when i talk to npc's. it seems to be the same npc on the same day (who i can then talk to on another day without issue). i'm submitting the reports and all that, but is there anything i can do to stabilize the game at all? i'm losing a lot of half-day progress.

If you're playing on steam, it's a known bug that talking to certain npc and in certain places crashes the game.
The devs are working on it.
The only workaround is to not talk to the npc. If you look through the crash reports you can easily find out which npc are affected by the bug and are crashing the game
