Why can't I place my fruit tree here? The surrounding 8 tiles are clear. I know the game doesn't like the edges so I went in the middle but it's still not allowing me to place it :(

Because to place it initially you need a 5x5 space. And then you can drop it to 3x3

No. In the beginning I had the 2x2 trees between them but that got to cramped. All the trees grew up side by side though.

the big trees in the pic are saplings, the ones that need space around them to plant. the seedlings, the 2x2 ones are in the back in a u shape. in the pic are still 3 missing though

i got stuck between the fully grown seedling and saplings. so i decided on the layout in the picture

Yeah I get stuck between them and the sprinklers all the time. Which is why I decided to let them die when they're out of season.
