#What determines when animals eat?

I'm trying to figure out how exactly the animal feeding mechanics work, if that makes sense. Like what kind of cycle they're on. For example in some games they'll trigger to eat at the same time every day like 8am. So if they're in the barn when 8am hits, they'll eat hay. Or if outside, they'll eat grass, and usually they only eat once a day.

Sometimes I want to let my animals outside for a bit, but i need the grass to rebound so i want them to eat the hay inside. But it seems like they dont eat inside until the end of the day. They also mow down quite a bit of grass, this goat is like pulling up multiple chunks on his own every day. It almost seems like they'll eat throughout the day if left outside, but only once in the barn? I'm trying to efficiently cycle them between the barn and pasture but the way they eat is confusing me.

Hay is pretty cheap so you can get through an entire season with about 100 pieces, depending on how many animals you have. I’ve got 16 and do just fine with that number.

You can leave them outside all day. They’ll take themselves back into the barn at 5 pm. I’m not sure what their scheduled eating time is. I think it happens overnight since I’ve never seen them actually eat

Each animal should only eat half a square. If they are doing more- record it and bug report it.

They eat within a few seconds of being let outside

Or

End of day if in the barn
