I bought the game on Steam yesterday because the Gamepass version I had was crashing to the point of non-playability despite being up-to-date. I thought... what the heck, the Steam is supposed to crash less, it's only $30.

Nope. In 3.1 hours of play, I've had three crashes, which is actually worse than Gamepass version, which generally only crashed in big events like the festivals.

I didn't save data on the first two Steam-version crashes that I had last night (but did use the Unreal Crash Reporter), but I wasn't wasn't anything special, just sorting things from backpack to chest at the end of the game day.

Tonight, on a freshly booted up computer, I made it barely past noon in-game and crashed while my character was dashing in the grassy area by the lake. I had just used the Fast Travel portal after doing some basic farm maintenance (harvesting daisies and turnips plus watering) and foraging.

Game version: v1-221

Computer Specs:
12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700 2.10 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti

Edit to add: Display Quality Preset was on Ultra. I've set it to high to see if that fixes the issue.

tried again. Got the daisies and turnips harvested, built a chest for storing veggies, tried to put things in the chests I had... crash. Display Quality Preset on medium for the third crash tonight. (sorry for so many posts; it won't let me attach multiple files to one)

This brings my crash total to 6 now. edit: 7. bug catching in the rain. crash #8 - putting items in chests again. I give up. Going to go play something that doesn't crash six times in one evening.

You should get a rerun this game is broken and the devs can’t do their jobs correctly

#

A hot fix should have been put out already people are losing their entire saves

I realized it was Cherry Blossom Festival day, zoomed down to the festival, threw a potato in the pot, managed to end the day and save before a fourth crash of the same day (10). Day 11 ran like a dream, although I'm noticing some serious lag on the steam version versus Gamepass. Any motion that requires a "swing" (scythe and pickax etc) has a bit of a jitter.

After 8 total crashes (2 on 1/18, 6 on 1/20) in less than 4 hours gameplay, I decided to try again this morning with a fresh computer reboot. Crashed around 14:00 in game day (spring 15, the only day I've played this morning), just puttering around doing crops and visiting shops and townfolk. Had just completed the quest to give Jim back his photo and walked over to the Inn to give Suki a spring vegetable and blam, crashy crashy crashy. Extra data: had the Jim lost photo cut scene and had used the fast travel portals twice (farm to lake, lake to diving pier).

For me, Steam version is far more unstable than Gamepass.

Although I've not saved all the crash data in text files, I am reporting it using the Unreal form that pops up after a crash on the Steam version. Attachment for Crash #9...

Massive amount of lag has begun, not just on swinging a pickax, axe, or scythe, but on anything that needs to possibly produce something: trash cans, harvesting/foraging, shaking trees.... It'll freeze or jerk, making me think it's trying to crash, but then revive. Got to the end of a long day - picked up upgraded pickax, foraged my way to the cavern, finished the BOS initiation question, and blam. froze in the mines on level 14 when I swung the sword to get a monster off the bronze ore rock it was standing on. Steam log says I've played a total of 7 hours. Not sure what day I'm on... something past 15 finally though.

Crash #11: Had rebooted my computer. Nothing else open. Started the game, attempted to walk out of the house.... crash.

Gonna have to declare the Steam version completely unplayable at this point.

# tawny tiger The fact that they are still charging $30.00 for a game that is unplayable tells...

This game is unplayable still because I also got a crash on my game and it still hasn’t been fixed yet. I love this game but at the moment it doesn’t feel like it’s worth 30 for all the crashes that haven’t been fixed for so many people. It’s frustrating because I am addicted to this game but can’t play it due to crash issues. I’m still waiting on a response to see if it’s fixed. Haven’t gotten one in 3 days.

Alas, I'm stubborn and played a bit more. Crashes are heavily centering around putting things in any sort of "box" - whether my makeshift chests, the shipping box, or the museum's donation box. Dashing is risky... I can watch the screen seize up.

I thought it might be the fast travel portals, but after zipping all over the island repeatedly, I eliminated that as an issue. Using the scythe underwater has no bugs or screen jitter at all, and I was able to find and activate the first five beacons.

Crash total: 13.

I play a lot of games, even those in early access, and none behave this badly. I don't mind the unfinished storylines/WIP parts because they show the potential for a lot of extra game play. But when I can easily play games like 7 Days to Die, Green Hell, Travelers Rest, Clanfolk - all early access games - with no crashes? This is absolutely atrocious. I thought maybe it was the game engine, because almost all of my games are Unity-based and not Unreal, but asked my spouse, who has the same computer system, and he says he is playing Ark and GTA with no problems.

As much as I want to play more idk if I want to start over each and everytime I play.

14 hours of play: 21 crashes. Finally started having underwater crashing as well, especially towards the end of the day. Only "fix" seems to be completely rebooting my computer between each day.

This is the first time I'm playing since the full release. I cannot move past spring 5. It's not just a simple crash to desktop either. It completely freezes my computer and I have no choice but to force restart every single time. My PC specs are above the minimum requirements and I've never had this issue in EA. I even tried lowering the display settings and switching to borderless window. This bums me out so much.

#

Oh and the crash happens while I'm tidying up the west side of my farm.

Crash total is now 28. the makeshift chests are most certainly buggier than anything I've ever seen. Makes me wonder now if I'd tracked things better if how many of my Gamepass PC crashes were related the the chests if this is how bad the "better" Steam PC plays/crashes.

Hello @stiff sapphire. Thank you for reporting the issue along with the crash log. May I ask for your full list of the device’s specifications details (RAM, HDD/SSD, etc.)? You can check how to do it here: https://techguided.com/how-to-check-your-computer-specs/ 🙂

Tech Guided

In this easy-to-follow guide, we'll walk you step-by-step through how to quickly check your computer's specs so that you can get the information you need. We'll show you how to check what CPU, GPU, motherboard, and RAM you have in your computer.

I'm sorry you have to experience the crashes. Before your game crashes, do you click on the menu tab or something? Are you playing using a keyboard-mouse or controller? 😮

I'd say 90% of the problems with crashing center around inventory/chests issues, most involving trying to open the makeshift chest. I haven't gotten this game to the point of wooden or stone chest to test if the problem persists there, but rarely, I do get a crash off the shipping box and most recently off Sam's store's inventory. Crash Total is currently 35.

I'll go to open a chest to add or remove items, the screen freezes, then the game crashes completely and I get the Unreal crash report program popping up. I've been submitting those with the data of what I was doing at the time. Most of the time, these crashes are middle to late in the day, but this afternoon I had a crash that was off a fresh reboot of the computer and I'd just loaded the game, walked outside and opened a chest. That was enough to crash it.

Here you go. I got more curious than frustrated today and just kept going once I realized the problem was centering around the chests/inventory.

To add a bit more data, the problem is without a doubt the chests or inventory causing major crashes. I started playing at 7:15, had gained access to stone chests finally, so wanted to move everything to those. First try, I got the chests made and almost everything sorted into the new chests. Second play, about halfway through my sort (6 makeshift chests' contents into 3 stone chests). Third, I barely got one makeshift chest moved over. Fourth, it crashed when I opened the first makeshift chest to take anything out. Timestamps on the crash log folders: 7:15, 7:28, 7:32, 7:34. File is from the most recent crash.

Crashed five minutes in on last night's attempt after the update was installed. Same result tonight. Absolutely cannot move things around in inventory at all, which makes it unplayable.

Dev asking for all these details I have never seen a game dev do this ever. They are a mess

Hello @stiff sapphire. We need additional information. I've forwarded your reports to the devs, but unfortunately we had trouble replicating the issue because it didn't happen on our end. Do you have a video of the issue so we can replicate the exact step as you do? Thank you! 🙂

if you have an ssd i would move the game to that instead of the hdd. there's a thing with the game constantly hitching when loading textures while running around, and i could see it crashing on that. when i moved the game to my ssd 99% of the hitching went away

stiff sapphire

three different ways it's crashing, but most seem to center around things going in and out of inventory. and I did take the advice of the other player and moved everything onto my SDD, but it still crashes. I even started a new game and it crashes the same way. SDD is NVMe PM9A1 NVMe Samsung 1024GB

Hadn't played in a while since the crashes make the game unplayable. Gave it another try tonight, so here's some new files where I started an entirely new character. Couldn't make it to the end of Day 1 without a crash, just over 10 minutes of play on a fresh PC boot after getting home from work. Back to playing No Man's Sky, I guess. 😦
