I thought the dig site unlocked when the second altar was completed. But I got a cutscene and can now access the deep forest (and I assume the dig site) while still having 2 offerings not complete on the second altar. Is this a bug or is it made accessible by total number of offerings?

You’ve the right info! May be a bug that the dig site area is accessible before completing the second altar, but either way I don’t think the actual stairs to the dig site itself is unlocked until you complete the second altar.

Is the dig site rather small, maybe 8x10? I was able to walk down a very short set of stairs and break some rocks in this small area and got maybe 6-10 fossil nodes

Yes. It’s bugged that you unlock it before the altar is complete. The cut scene you saw opens the deep forest, but the steps shouldn’t appear until the 2nd altar is completed.

When I get on later, can I screenshot the area that I think is the dig site to confirm if it is? I tried googling what the dig site looks like but I think was unsuccessful in figuring it out 😂

The stairs aren’t meant to appear as that is the dig site. It’s bugged.
