I'm not new to the game, I have tried it on the early access. Sometimes we got the islanders to send us mail along with some homecooked food and we will have them in our inventory after we claimed them. That's what happened in the early access and now in the 1.0 gameplay, I can't find them in my inventory or anywhere. Is this a bug? Or are they stored in our fridge? I haven't upgraded my house so I don't have a kitchen yet.

No, the recipes are different. Some islanders do give actual food to be consumed. In the early access, I can consume them
