So I slowly got a few bits and bobs of hardwood by finding a log I was able to cut with a silver axe near the water. But I saw no such logs on the farm. Other than that one log near the water there doesn't appear to be any other way to obtain enough hardwood necessary to upgrade any of your tools to golden that relies on hardwood. If I chose not to get the axe I would have soft locked myself....

the logs on the farm are currently bugged- the first time you log out they disappeared- this has been fixed for 1.0 so you will have access to hardwood before you unlock that first area (and it's enough to upgrade the tools)
so not on purpose that it happened 🙂
